Hi, I had my RNY on 10-18-05 and just recently starting having
constipation. It is very painful. An it builds up so I only go to the
bathroom like every 4-5 days. I'm not sure what to suggest because I
haven't tried anything yet.

I am in the same situation, My RNY was Dec 13th. I only go like once a
week, and honestly it takes me about 1/2 hour. Then I am in lots of pain.
I am trying a Colace today, I can let you know

I am almost three years post-op and experienced the same thing after my
surgery. My doc recommended milk of magnesia. I started with a half of a
dose because I am sensative to meds. Give it a try and remember that your
body is still in shock but will adjust after time. Good luck!!

It is due to the increased amount of protein you are taking in to your
system. I use peri-colace. I am 5 months out and found that increasing
water and exercise (15-30 min. of walking) helped things move better.
Oatmeal also works for me as long as I increase the amount of water. I
have found a good balance with fruit/vegetables and protein and rarely use
the peri-colace.

I experienced the same thing for the a few months post-op but by increasing
my water intake, walking, and occasionally using Milk of Magnesia, it all
corrected itself.

HI, I too have had the same problem, I am ten weeks out, I found a chewable
fiber choice (S.F) that seems to work nicely, along with water and
exercise. Best wishes, hope you feel better! April

Hi I have the same problem and I found some stuff called liquid fiber sold
by global health...you get 2 bottles for 11.99 and you use 2 ozs in 2 ozs
of liquid and it has no taste whatsoever....take it 2 to 3 times a day and
I usually am able to go daily as long as I dont' miss taking it....hope
this helps.

Because you are in the lquid phase of this journey constipation is almost
unavoidable. The reason is we don't take much fiber in at this phase and
that combined with the high protein takes a toll on the potty time that we
have then. My Doc suggested colace because its a lubricant and try and
drink more. Two colace (stool softeners) a day should help. Also moving
around helps. Do some additional walking to move the situation. You don't
have to do much but a little more than what you are doing.

I, too, experience constipation.....a dose every other day of
"Miralax" or its generic equivalent, will do the trick..have your
doc prescribe it.

Drink more water, exercise and take a stool softener. They are not habit
forming and they are not a laxative, which your body CAN become dependent
on.

I hade my RnY on Dec. 19 and since i started the prenatal vitamin I have
having the same problem; I am trying Milk of Magnesia but it seems not to
work so well....also drinking a cup of coffee in the morning seems to aid
the system along with lots of water and yes, the exercise....good luck....

I had my surgery June 1st 2005 and have had the same problem until a doctor
recommended taking chewable Fiber Choice. I have not had a problem in
about 3 months thanks to that suggestion. Not sure as how far out you
might wait to start taking it but they are chewable and the fiber choice
brand tastes pretty good.

I was the same, and it was very painful. I tried the MOM and it did not
help. Now i take a stool softener every day, and make sure I gett
roughage, such as flax seed on my yogurt and veggies and nuts. Also, now I
can eat lettuce and find it helps.
