Question:
1 week of fruit and veggies only, is this safe??
6 months post-op (gastric bypass) considering hiring a personal trainier for 6 week program. During our meeting the trainer wants me to Detox and Cleanse; suggest I eat only fuit and veggie no protein until the second week. Is this safe for me to do? Contacted Dr's offce, no response yet. — HuneeB (posted on January 29, 2011)

That trainer has no idea what he is doing. Besides if you had to be cleaned
out for surgery your colon was totally clean at the time of surgery. No
protein for a week? Your body will get what it needs to live from your
heart, organs and other muscles:( Your surgeon should get some basic info
to the trainer. He could endanger someones life. I would pick a different
trainer since this guy is so uninformed what else is he clueless about:(

Trainers aren't trained in nutrition. I had a personal trainer who had all
of these wacky diets he had the people in our group on. When one of his
caused my blood sugar to rise dangerously, he told me to hang in there he
knew what he was doing. Tell him it is not safe for you to go without
protein and if he gives you any lip hire a new one.

When I decided to work with a trainer I made it perfectly clear that I WAS
trained in the nutritional demands of post-WLS life while they were NOT.
Therefore, I would make the commitment to share what I was eating with them
/ educate them - but for the most part they are there to work my body only.
If they were not comfortable working like that... I passed. I found someone
who trains my body and who has learned enough about my nutrition that she
is starting to consider advertising to post WLS patients.

Absolutely Not!! Without protein your muscles and heart suffer. You have to
have 60-80 mg of protein everyday, forever. This trainer obviously is not
educated on the way a post WLS persons body works. You will run accross
many that don't. I recommend the book. Weighloss surgery for dummies. Hope
this helps..

When ever doing anything as far as food, you must contact either your Dr or
your NUT. I can't give you advice, but I for myself MUST intake 85 grams
of protein a day.

Is he saying no protien shakes? I would not do it without your doctors
approval but if he says NO protein even in shakes, fire him and find a new
one.

I'm 3 months post op and still can not digest meat. I talked to NUT and
this is OK as long as doing protein shakes and I put peanut butter on
apples and eat beans....I wouldn't go without protein until you hear back
from NUT or Dr. I have had several comp-lications since bypass, unrelated
to surgery. One thing I have found out is that very few PROFESSIONALS
understand bariatrics.

I'm just supporting what everyone above has said. You can not go without
protein. Your body will get it from somewhere even if it means taking it
from vital organs. You would probably begin major hair loss too.

You need your protein all the time. This would not kill you but it can be a
real problem. I would not do it.
