Question:
Still hurts to eat and drink

Its been 1.5 months since my gastric bypass surgery. I am still having discomfort and sometimes pain when I eat or drink. Will this discomfort go away soon or should it have gone away already?    — LS74 (posted on July 25, 2010)

Hi Linda, I am 7 mos out and feel wonderful! If I eat or drink too fast or too much (I can still only eat small amounts) then it can be painful. I recommend very small amounts and chew chew chew! Also don't drink with a straw and just take very small sips and then pause. Never drink and eat together! I hope this helps... it has helped with me. Debbie

You are still healing, the pain goes away, but I must say it has been a rough road for me this past year. Yes, it does get better, but and this is a big but, you must be compliant with your eating program. Whatever your Dr tells you to eat, and when to eat it, do it. Each Dr is different in their diet, mine was very exacting and I followed it to a T. I really feel for you my weightloss sister, but it is so worth it! Good luck!

Actually, Linda, that discomfort could be a very good thing. it tells you that the operation was a success and is working. Your comfort will get better with time, but I had my RNY two years ago July 2nd, and there are some things that I still get a good deal of discomfort from. I don't want to be like I was before and I don't want it to be a comfortable possibility. Yes, you will be able to eat comfortably again for the most part, but right now you are recovering from a major serious operation, and have to give it a chance to heal. Be patient and let the surgery do it's magic for you. Your dreams are starting to come true, and your new life, your second chance has begun...embrace it and enjoy your journey to a wonderful future. God bless you.

1st make sure you are chewing your food enouch not taking to big of bites or drinks. If tha tis not the answer see your surgeon it may be a stricture. Strictures can be easily repaird via endoscopic procedures. good luck
