Question:

I am one week post op from having RNY.I have had no pain or sickness at all.I was told to stay on liquids only with zero carbs and zero calories.Ok what can I drink other than water and Crystal Light? I am craving juice! I have had several broths, yogurts, sugar free candy(1 tictac) and sugar free pudding, potato soup ,bean soup, and Aes Advantage drinks. All liquids only! other than the tictac .What are some new choices for me? Can I have V8 juice? I asked my dietician about soft fruits ,babyfood,or juice and she said maybe in a year. Please some one help!!!    — davonjack (posted on February 24, 2010)

Yes I am craving fruits sooo bad!!!! I was told I could not have them because they have natural sweeteners and that could cause dumping.I would love to hear other week 2 RNY postop diets if anyone would like to share them.

I ate small amounts of fruit like No SugarAdded Applesauce, peaches, mandarin oranges. These are in 3 oz containers by Dole/Del monte. Fresh Strawberries, fresh peaches. You just have to eat small amounts. I eat 1/2 a container with a 4 oz. cottage cheese.

puddings, yogurts, potato and bean soups are not clear liquids, they are soft foods. but i am surprised by your dietician's answer.i was allowed regular food at six weeks as tolerated. i would ask them for their reasoning.good luck.

A year for soft fruits, baby food, and juice? Sounds a little extreme. I know all dieticians and docs are different, but wow! Most people are cleared for anything they tolerate (healthy of course) after 6 months. I know I'm 4 1/2 months out and I enjoy fruit every day. I don't get what you are trying to say though. You say that you are told to stay on liquids with 0 carbs and 0 calories yet you talk of eating broths, yogurts, and other stuff. Do you mean, what can you drink? Water and Crystal light are about it as far as drinks are concerned. But, if you are eating soups and other stuff, veggie juice should be just fine, but watch out for sugar content. Other juices "could" be ok if they are no-sugar added. That does not mean they are sugar free. With those there are natural sugars, but most shouldn't dump on them. They aren't calorie free though, and drink them in limited quantities. You could also try the other flavored waters that are out there!

Make sure you think about the quality of what you are putting in your body. Instant mashed potatoes and meat babyfood can be reallly great additions to broth. You can take just about any soup you want and put it through the blender. keep any serving of anything under 12 grams of sugar to keep from dumping. be careful as milk has 12g in 8oz. I peel an apple and eat all the time with no problems. I am 2 months post op. One thing that I have learned is everyone is different and some people can eat certain things and others cant. You have to see what works for you. Take your time and try things slowly. If you eat something and it doesn't bother you then go ahead. If it makes you sick or you can't swallow it don't push it. i did liquids for 3 weeks then moved to soft food for 3 weeks then ate whatever I wanted as tolerated. Pizza and french fries make me want to throw up, but I can eat a bean burrito and I am fine. for now if you have to I would say try some lunch meat, soft cheese, andscrambled eggs, but eat slow and chew ALOT before swallowing. A blender is a good tool for the first few weeks though. After two monthes though your options should really open up, not after a year...

I had my surgery on January 15 2010, and to me it is so hard to determined what you can eat and what you cant, I have been still drinking a lot of liquids, the water is hard somtimes to go down, so I would drink tea. I can eat some salads, but some make me dump. I eat alot of soup, popcycles, Jello, fruit cups no sugar, I tried strawberrys and other fruit but it made me dump. I lost 32lbs so far.

I wasn't allowed any carbs until I lost 75% of my weight. Well, I did have beans, which are carbs but my weight loss wasn't as fast as when I just had protein. As I read I see some Dr. are very liberal on what their patients may eat, mine isn't, but I am at goal six months from surgery. Now I do have COMPLEX carbs only.

If I were you i would dilute no sugar added juice with water, to see how you personally tolerate it.

I am 8 weeks postop RNY and eat everything tolerable. My surgeon and NUT advised at my 1-month postop that I had no food restrictions, but that it would be "hit and miss" and it has been. Sometimes a certain food digests fine and if I eat the same thing the following day I will get the stuck feeling (quite discomforting) and it is hard to understand why (thus the hit and miss mentality). But at 10 days postop I was able to eat/digest (no dumping/vomiting) a hard-boiled or scrambled egg, sugar-free applesauce, sugar-free puddings, oatmeal, cream of wheat, grits, yogurt, and Turkey Hill brand Diet Green Tea with Ginseng (to drink) as well as I get Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice (Light) and do a 50/50 w/water for a flavor spike to the H20. You might want to check out bariatriceating.com -- that offers healthy snack alternates (all protein, no carbs) for some crunch appeal (basically your head playing games with your stomach) that will satisfy your need to "chew" and not just drink. No kidding, too bad they don't operate on our heads along with our stomachs. Best of luck to you on your journey. ~Trish

I have not had surgery yet so I'm not even going to pretend that I have post-op knowledge. However, my surgeon requires that we eat nothing but protein post-up until we lose 75% of our excess weight. At that point he will reintroduce fruits, veggies, etc. Whole wheat bread, pasta, brown rice, etc. will still always be an exception and not the rule. Has anyone else been asked to stick with protein only?

Wow. I had RNY on 2/4. I can do just about any vegetable as long as I mash the heck out of it with my fork. The stewed apples at Cracker Barrel are a no no for me. They must be REALLY sweet, cause I dumped so bad. I can eat the apples in the Healthy choice meals as long as I scrape the oats off the top. Sugar Free popsicyles are my favorite and I love baby food, all kinds. I would try the v8 light and see if it makes you sick or not. Baby food will not kill you at week 2!!!
