Question:
Protein Shakes/Smoothies???

I am having surgery end of April. I wanted to try some protein shakes, even though I hear your taste buds change, so I could try to figure out what I might like best. Oh my gosh! Horrible! I used a french vanilla w/1% milk and put half a banana in it and some mixed berries, then put it through the blender...sounded great, smelled pretty good, the taste was AWFUL!!! Any suggestions on what to try to help get through the liquid phase after surgery?...Thanks    — gonnabethinfinally (posted on March 27, 2009)

First you might want to try a different protein shake. I got mine at GNC. Also I took a ice cube tray and filled it with yogurt and frooze it. So when I make a protein shake I use a little milk, protein powder, 3 to 4 yogurt cubes and some fresh froozen fruit. Taste great. Have a great day.

www.unjury.com their shakes are really good. they have a chicken soup one that taste like the broth of real chicken soup and the chocolate tastes really good. I mix with skim milk and put a couple drop of MINT extract and it tastes just like mint chocolate chip ice cream MMmmmm!

I also had the same problem with some shakes. I got on allstarhealth.com and ordered the brand "Nectar" Cappuchhino flavored and its very good. Taste like caramel and coffee and that worked for me. I put 1% milk and 2 ice cubes and mix them all up. I went through alot of brands before I found that one. Its nummy!!

I "Googled" protein powders looking for one that sounded good and I stumbled upon Lean Dessert Protein shakes. They come in yummy flavors like Chocolate Coconut, Banana Nut, and Cinnamon Bun. I ordered several....I'll let you know how they are! If you're interested, just google "Lean Dessert Protein Powder". :)

My surgery is in 12 days, so I have been trying protein shakes to get prepared for post-surgery life. On the vitalady.com website you can buy samples (1 serving each) of different flavors and brands of protein shakes, so that you can try a lot of different ones to see what you like before you invest in a big tub of the shake. I did that and it saved me a lot of money. So far, of the ones I have tried, I really like the Nectar's Chocolate Truffle, ISOPure Dutch Chocolate, and the ISOPure Creamy Vanilla. I've tried them with water and skim milk, but I think they are better with skim milk. I hated the Nectar Carribean Cooler. The Nectar Crystal Sky was good too. It tasted like something that would be great on a hot summer day, especially if you blended it with ice. Good luck.

If you buy the cheap stuff it taste like crap. I also get mine from GNC, The one I have found not very good there is the strawberry, Sweet to begin with the flat not inviteing at all, I like the bananna cream by it self or with chocolate 50-50 mix great taste and keeps me good for 4 hours. Scott

I'm a year post-op and still use protein shakes to supplement my protein intake (and quell my sweets cravings). The only protein that I've ever LOVED (and I tried a lot of them) is Unjury (chocolate and unflavored). Unjury is also great about sending lots of recipes and nutritional tips with each order I also learned that I don't like the texture when I mix it with ice cubes in the blender. I use a shaker cup, fill it with 8 oz of skim milk, add my scoop of chocolate protein powder, shake to mix it up and let it sit for a few minutes so the foam can die down. Over time I also learned to mix up my next day's worth in a larger shaker cup - it makes the texture and the flavor even better. The unflavored is good to have on hand to add to your SF pudding mix and other already flavored soft foods or beverages. Check them out at www.unjury.com - good luck!

Donna, good luck on your surgery! I wasn't that crazy about the store bought protein drinks except for Unjury. I made my own protein drink - 1% milk, dash of SF cranberry juice, low fat yogurt (banana flavor), some frozen or fresh berries, one banana and a scoop of protein mix. The first time I had this I thought I was in heaven.

My doctor does not like protein shakes, so his patients, do clear liquids for 5 days, then soft foods for 3 weeks and then slowly added normal proteins and veggies(cooked only for the first month. I have never had a protein shake since surgery and my labs are all normal. If you don't like the shakes you won't eat/drink them. There are options without shakes. That being said, I like medifasts shakes, mix with water and drink they are very low carb, low calorie and the flavors are OK. But their soups are great, especially their chili one of my favorite things. They are pricey but the flavors are OK. There are also many premixed protein shakes and some of them are pretty good. I used to drink them before surgery when I would go to the gym.
