Question:
Why haven't I lost any weight?
Had RNY on 7/1/08. Weighted 218 going in. Came home weighing 224. I have been walking at least 13,000 steps daily, feel good, drinking protein shakes and getting in all liquids. Still weigh 219.8 and it's been 10 days! What am I doing wrong? — Magdalena52286 (posted on July 10, 2008)

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago. the first 10 days I lost 7 pounds so you are
right around there. They told me that I dont really need the protien shakes
just yet because my body has a lot to use up. as long as you feel good
thats whats important. someone the other day told me it took a long time to
gain weight, it will take time to lose it. Keep doing what your are doing
you will get there. If you want to talk I'm here.

My surgeon told me that my body held on to all of it's liquids in the form
of water weight gain after surgery because of the very low calories
(starvation mode), the trauma of major surgery, and the hormones that go
along with being a female. I went through the same thing. I weighed at
the doctor's office with one of those scales that tells what weighs how
much and I had actually lost body fat, but gained fluid weight and muscle
mass.
Don't sweat it, it will come. If you follow the rules, it will happen.
Congratulations on your WLS and just try to focus on the future... the
smaller clothes you will fit in, the compliments you will be getting from
people noticing soon. You're getting in enough protein and walking
already... doing great. You're just getting started so cut yourself some
slack. It will happen.
I might suggest laying off of the scales and trying to pay attention to
some non-scale victories.
Welcome to the loser's bench!

That may have been your weight when you went in, but they passed a lot of
fluids on you and your body resisted losing anything until it settled down.
Some people don't lose anything in the first three weeks. Give it time,
it is only 10 days. Did you lose that much on a diet before in just 10
days and still stress out your body? Best of success to you.

I felt the same you did. Somedays I still do. I had my band placed on May
1st and have lost a few here a few there. But it's a loss all the same, and
in time all of these few here and there's will add up. Before you know -you
will not reconize your own self. Congratulations to you....
Your doing fine just stick to the exercising.

Who really knows why some people don't lose as fast as others? There are
so many factors and combinations of reasons...but one things for sure is
that you are doing things right and eventually you'll see the weight coming
off...so keep your chin up...You'll get moving soon! You have to remember
too, you are a "lightweight" and lightweights lose so much slower
than the heavy weights because you have sooooo much less to lose...and you
will probably be barely over if not under 100 lbs in a year...

You're doing great! You may be building some nice lean muscle mass from the
walking which will make it seem like you are gaining (or not losing) at
first but then the real fat burning will kick in. Another helpful tool that
I have found is checking the ketones in my urine (via ketostix). This will
tell you if you are burning fat and/or eating too many carbs.

As our Dr. always says "you didn't gain the weight over night, you
won't loose it over night. Be patient this is a new tool and with any luck
and good diet you will have it for the rest of your life!

The only thing you are doing is wrong is getting on the scale and worrying
about how much / how fast you're losing.
You feel good, you've been exercising, you're drinking your shakes, and
getting in all your liquids... keep up the good work.
All you gotta do now is be patient.

I had my surgery on 7/1/08 also. My surgeon told me not to be hard on
myself the frist month. Your body has to heal. don't get on the scale
everyday, once a week is the best way to measure the weight coming off.
Good advise. I'm not going to get weighed till I go back for my two week
appointment. Follow the program and the weight will come off faster than
you think and remember walk, walk and walk some more. Lisa
