Question:
3 1/2 weeks post op RNY
Can I start taking Motrin now? I have a horrible shin splint and I think Motrin will help. I am icing it now. — tayee24 (posted on June 23, 2008)

Motrin
Generic Name: ibuprofen
We are not suppose to take any ibuprofen after WLS. Not now, not almost
ever (some cases exluded). Talk to your doctor.

I am 7 weeks post op today and last week I had a very sore foot. They say
it is arthritis and this dr called in an anti-inflamitory and my surgeon
said no way.

NOOOOO!!!!!. According to my doctor we will NEVER be able to take any
ibuprofen products ever again. We will only be able to take acetaminophen
for pain or prescription pain medications. Please call your surgeon, not
your PCP, to verify this......Good Luck

I'm in full agreement with that answer. I am 5 years out, and my Dr. still
says no motrin or aspirin. I have also been having trouble with ulcers. Our
tummies are too fragile after WLS. You do need to speak with your Dr. and
get his advice on the matter.

NO. RNY patients are NEVER allowed any anit-inflammatory medications
(ibuprofen, aspirin, aleve, motrin etc.) For the rest of your life, due to
the very high risk of ulcers. You can have up to 4000 mg of Tylenol a day
if your liver is healthy.
Look up on the internet home remedies for shin splints - it's likely icing
it 4 times daily for 15 minutes, and rest.

No never...Take tylenol instead...I chop up two tylenol when I have pain
and it helps...It helps if you get uncoated tylenol tablets...It works
fster without all that coating to have to dissolve first...and the taste of
tylenol is not bad...I actually just chomp it a few times in my mouth and
swallow with water...
Good luck with shin splints...I had them when I was in the army...They hurt

We can NEVER take OTC ibuprofen or any of it's similar meds as the
potential to erode our stoma is too much of a risk for the rest of our
lives. That should have been explained to you pre-operatively. Ulcers are
a big problem with them as well.
I have obesity related joint pain and arthritis in my hips and lower back
and my surgeon does allow me to take prescription Celebrex as it is a
rapidly dissolving capsule. If I have a lot of restriction, I dump it out
into some protein pudding and choke it down. I also have to take liquid
Lortab occasionally if I have a really bad flareup- like today for
instance. Very damp and rainy here today and I hurt badly.
Most people in my support group take the extra strength rapid release
Tylenol or liquid Tylenol. The only problem with the liquid is that it has
a lot of sugar so be careful.
I agree with a previous author who says to get this med/prescription with
your bariatric surgeon ONLY, NOT your PCP.
Good luck to you,
