Question:
10 Days pos op

Hi I am 10 days post op and have only lost 13 pounds. I am getting all my protein, walking about 5 blocks a day, staying active, drinking 64 ounces of water. Eating are soup, fudge pops, protein, protein drinks, etc. Help. I am afraid I am not doing it right.    — tayee24 (posted on June 7, 2008)

Good God honey how much did you think you were going to lose? You're losing better than a pound a day! That's great! Ease up, you're doing fine.

It would be dangerous to loose any faster. I hope you did not have unrealistic expectations. Faster loss could damage your heart. Try to walk an additional block each day to build up energy and stamina, and burn up more calories. Good Luck. Nancy Nurse

When is the last time you lost 13 pounds in 10 days? I am 2 months post op and have lost 30 pounds and told I am doing great. I hope you took your measurements pre-op? I have lost 15 1/2" over all. It's not just about pounds you know? Give yourself some time.

I agree with everyone else that you have lost a tremendous amount of weight in a very short period of time and need to cut yourself some slack. Perhaps you do have some unrealistic expectations. Be sure the soups/broths you are eating are low sodium so that you watch your water weight and make sure the fugdge pops are sugar free. I would also advise you to stay off the scales for awhile. I know I'm the exception, but, I don't own a set of scales and only weigh at the doctor's office. Good luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

CONGRATULATIONS! That's over a pound per day!! Just take a deep breathe and relax Allow your body to get used to the changes. Adjustments are absoulute and one thing is for sure this is a life long journey, don't try to finish too quick, there's learning to be done along the way.

I'm 11 days out and have lost 7-1/2 pounds and think I am doing great! You have to be realistic about what to expect from your body! I would gladly trade with you!

Are you complaining or BRAGGING? TEN pounds in THIRTEEN days would be GREAT! Here you are complaining about the REVERSE! ;-) You are doing FINE. Keep eating the protein and remember that you ALSO need some CARBS. Not TOO many but you do need some. If you don't get enough, your body will start robbing itself of PROTEIN and NOT FAT! You need to have just the right amount of Carbs to keep the body's metabolic set point above starvation mode. The BEST way to figure out how to do that is to see a nutritionist. He or she will know how to calculate a diet that will suit YOUR needs for YOUR BODY. You cannot use someone ELSE'S Diet because THEIR body is different. Their NEEDS may be different too. You will want to LOSE weight while they may want to MAINTAIN their body weight. Your diet will CHANGE over time as your body's NEEDS will change. Your best bet for OPTIMAL weight loss is to see a nutritionist that has experience with weight loss patients. If you cannot find one that has experience with weight loss patients, then the next best option is to find one without that experience and work on learning together. The nutritionist will be able to tell you how to optimize your diet so that you can lose the maximum amount of weight. Great JOB! I hope this helps! Hugh

Tammy, you are doing it right, just stay on track and don't worry about the numbers. 10 days out and 5 blocks of walking is great. At 14 days out I pushed myself to 2 miles a day, so don't be afraid to go that 6th block, and then take your car on th at route and drive it to see how far you actually walk. Some people lose a lot quickly, but most of us lose a few pounds at a time. I lost about 2 pounds per week average, even with walking and drinking water. Just keep doing right, your consistency will pay off in the end. It took me a year, but I lost all my weight and have kept it off for 4 years now, Praise God! You will too. My friend would lose and wait, lose and wait, while I would lose at least a half pound each week or more, sometimes, on a really good week, it would be 3 or 4 pounds, but mostly 1/2 to 2 pounds a week. I wasn't discouraged by this because for the first time in my life, I did lose and didn't yoyo back, so I am happy with that. Find little things that are changing and be happy with those things. Weigh only once a week, who needs the stress of analyzing weight loss/stability every day? No one needs that stress. Keep going girl, take care! Patricia P.

*SMILES* Ok look lets stop and think. At the norm before WLS it wash hard to loose 8lbs a month let alone 8lbs a week. You just said you lost 13lbs in 10 Days! You don't find this amazing? That is excellent. Don't be too harsh on yourself. You don't want to loose much faster than that. Wonderful job. That is better than standard.

My surgeon said she wants to see me lose 3-4 lbs a week. So 13 pounds for 10 days is excellent. You're doing great.

I think you are doing wonderful. I have lost 62lbs in about 10 weeks, but it's not the weight loss number that makes me feel good it's that I can work 12 to 16 hours and not feel tired and my back and legs don't hurt. It helps sometimes to not think about the numbers, but how you feel and how much better you can get around in your daily life. Good luck and remember it is all worth it.

I am 8 days post-op and I am feeling the same way, I went to the doctors to get my meds in liquid form today and I have only lost 9 pds. But reading your blog is helping me. I kinda feel like I don't know what I am doing and if it's even the right way.

I am 8 days post-op and I am feeling like I don't know what I am doing wrong. I went to the doctors today to get a medication turn to liquid instead of the pill and I have only lost 9lbs and I feel like I should be doing better. Is this all in my head? I still feel like I am still going to be fat next month just like I am know,
