Question:
Does everyone have extra skin after losing weight with RNY?
I'm 36 and need to lose 110 pounds but am afraid of extra skin forever. — hmoore (posted on April 10, 2008)

I have extra skin after surgery and weight loss. I made sure to use a lot
of lotion with vitamin e so that I wasnt dry, and I think it helped with
the elasticity. Dr even said he was amazed that I didnt have as much loose
skin. hang in there tho, the weight loss is worth it, plus you get
healthier!!

not everyone has extra skin...depends on age, amount of weight loss and
heredity. Still, even if you did get extra skin, it's better, IMO, than
the extra weight. There's always plastic surgery too if you wanted after
the weight comes off.

Sounds to me, you worry more about your apperance than your health. So what
if you have saggy skin atleast you won't be Morbid Obese.

Two issues here, but the first is you are young enought and might have a
chance of all the skin coming back in place if you take care of it and
excersize regularly, and that would be 5-6 times a week. The second issue
is if you want to live into your 90's then you need to think of your health
first, and the extra skin second. I am 62 and just had RNY WLS. I have
lost over 80 pounds in the first 4 months, and I have hanging skin on my
arms and legs, but for some reason my checks and stomach have tighten up.
Regardless, I never felt better and if I had to do it all over again, I
will be first in line. Best of success to you.

I have lost 130 pounds and yes I have some extra skin but it is no where
near what the extra weight was. Best of luck.

Hi Holly...I was 38 when I had WLS 16 months ago....I've lost 140 pounds
and I do have some excess skin...mostly I have a flabby tummy and flabby
thighs...I, too, worried about this prior to surgery however, it really
doesn't bother me at all now. In clothes, one could never tell that I used
to weight 280 pounds and naked, well...only my husband sees me naked and he
thinks I look great. I wear a size 6 and I suppose if I had the skin
removed maybe I'd wear a smaller size but since my dream was to just wear a
"normal" size, I am okay with exactly where I am at....you will
feel so much better than truly how you look really becomes secondary...good
luck! Kristi

So what's the worst thing about that? You could live an extra 20 years if
you get that 110 pounds off you. Not to mention all the other issues
associated with Morbid Obesity.

I guess i need to reword my question. It sounds like i am considering NOT
having surgery for this reason, i can assure you this is NOT the case. i am
only curious as to wether some have been able to lose the weight without
the extra skin . -holly

My date is 5/5. I too, thought about the flabby skin but I do plan on
exercising and even if I do have xtra skin, it will be worth it. I am 48
yoa and am more worried about all the other complications. I think I am
having jitters as this is all going really faster than I expected

I lost 80 pounds and do not have "extra skin" which looks bad. I
am not worried about the scars or extra skin, I consider them my battle
wounds at this point. I had 100 pounds to lose before my surgery. I am 16
months post op. I believe we should try to exercise those areas where we
don't like the look of our skin before we think about plastic surgery to
get rid of that skin. Everyone is different. What bothers me might not
bother you. It's OK to be concerned about extra skin. I know that my
surgery gave me my life back. I can walk, run, breathe again! Extra skin
does not matter to me at this point. Good luck with your surgery!

I am 34 have lost 116 pounds since my surgery in August 2006. Yes, I have
loose skin, however, I have noticed that weight training does help some,
and be really diligent with using lotion. It is inevitable to have some
skin, as we lose the weight so quickly, but whenever the loose skin gets to
me, I just try and remind myself where I came from and I would much rather
be dealing with loose skin now than the 116 pounds I was carrying on me
before! The loose skin thing should not deter you if you are ready to do
this surgery otherwise.
