Question:
Need some food suggestions - 5 days post-op

I am on the full post-op liquids phase. I am supposed to be adding the protein. My problem is that I have very fussy tastebuds. I am gagging on the protein shakes. I did use the choc Carn Instant Bkfst prior to surgery, but even that is tough now. (I do have unflavored protein powder to add to foods.) I've always hated milk, but I'm able to get through it. I can't stand the main suggestions that I was givien; yogart (I've tried over the years), protein shakes, cream of wheat. The artificial choc/van flavors are horrid for me. Are there other flavorings? What else can I add them to? My understanding is that the protein powders don't work well in any hot foods. Thanks for any suggestions - trying to hang in there.    — psiegle (posted on February 17, 2008)

As far as the CIB protein shakes, I am all with you on the taste. It was difficult to get through. I ended up living on the vanilla ones. What I did find that I liked was soup, especially tomato soup. I would mix protein powder (Beneprotein) in it and just wouldn't get the soup piping hot. I'd wait a few minutes and then add the protein (2 scoops), some nonfat sour cream and plain yogurt. (About 1 large T. of each of those). I found it delicious. True, my tastes did change after surgery. But, was I ever ready to give up those inst. breakfast shakes. Yuck.

GNC makes a line of protein shakes called Designer Whey. They have some fruit flavors that are pretty good, and 20 gm of protein per scoop. See if that works for you. Good luck! I still can't stand vanilla and chocolate. What I do is take Cappuccino Soy Slender (I'm lactose intolerant) and mix it with body fortress protein to make mocha and I have that for breakfast. This gives me 30 gm of protein for breakfast. This plus the fruit flavored Designer Whey made it doable for me. Very important to get your protein, that's what helps you heal. Congratulations on your surgery and good luck!

You might want to try protein capsules. There's one on the market called Capsul-Pro and you can get it at www.nashuanutrition.com It's the only alternative I know of to protein shakes etc... Good luck!

I mainly drink New Whey. I add a 16.9 oz. bottle of water (otherwise a little syrupy) and it tastes like coolade. It has 42 oz. of protein. This way you get protein and water. I take all the vitamins while drinking this. Get it all done at one time. It is kind of spendy, but beats that thick powder.

Hi. I found something that I like a lot. It is a protein liquid that you buy in these testtube type bottles. It's called New Whey. The come in different flavors (like koolaid) in a 25 grs. of protein size or 48 grams (I think). They are sugar and fat free. Undiluted the are sickening but mixed with water they're pretty good. The cons....they don't fill you up since they are just like drinking a glass of water. Plus you're not getting extra protein that you might be getting from a shake with milk and yogurt added to it. Pros.....they go down fast and easy. Don't leave me feeling semi-nauseated afterwards like the shakes sometimes do. I drink the fruit flavor and I'm picky too so I think they're pretty good. I get them at a place called Vitamin World in WOodburn oregon but they have them online too. Chris

I never tolerated milk well either, (don't like it), I do soy milk. Also I found some protien drinks I like really well. One is called "Chike" (dry powder comes in it's own bottle, you add water) and also "Nectar" (add water to this as well). Both are available on the barixclinicsstore.com web site. (reasonably priced) I also LOVE the cappuccino drinks called "AchievOne" it's available on the bariatriceating.com web site. (Best tasting "Frappuccino" EVER!!!) My taste buds where OFF right after surgery also, but don't worry, things WILL settle down eventually.

I have a great suggestion so you are not wasting 25.00 or more on a jug of protein you hate. Go to vitalady.com you can order small samples for 1.00, 2.00 ect and then you can try them and what you like you can buy after you have tried it. if you need help getting there let me know laurie

Hi Pat, I think most of us have been in the same boat you are in now. You just have to keep trying things until you can find one you like. Laurie had a great idea with the samples. I found I like a product called Nectar and the flavor of Fuzzy Navel. I mix it with water and a to go packet of Crystal Light Lemonade. It is really good and it dissolves completely. Keep plugging. I mixed protien powder in cream of chicken soup, cream of potato soup and tomato soup. For the soup with chunks I used a stick blender and blended it into almost a heavy cream. Worked for me. Good luck.

Pat, There is a fruit protein drink that I highly recommend. I'm almost a year out and I still drink it because the taste is tolerable and comes with 40 grams of protein. It is called Nature's Best Isopure Zero Carb Protein Drink and it is Lactose and Preservative free. They can be purchased at the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC. When I first started drinking them I'd mix it with water and if you drink the Celestial Seasoning Teas the a little of the Apple Melon mixes well. My three favorites are Apple Melon, Grape Frost, and Alpine Punch. The orange is horrible -- many of the other's I haven't tried so hopefully these will help you since they are not diary based. I'm to the point where I drink them straight. I drink them while working out, bowling or just sitting at my desk. 40 grams of protein -- half of what I need for the day. Hope these work for you.

www.bariatriceating.com has several protien drinks -- both in poweder form and premade. I highly recommend the following Whey Gourmet powder flavors: Creamy Caramel Dip, Arctic Frappachino Frappe and Dark Chocolate Mousse. Keep in mind that when it comes to taste. some of the things that we will be taking in won't taste as good as what we'd really like....but it's by eating what we really liked that got us to a point where we needed surgery to "fix" it! Good luck to you.

I know how ya feel, Pat. I have tried many. The one that I have stuck with is Unjury (www.unjury.com). They have a very good flavor and consistency. Plus, they have a chicken flavor that is just like chicken broth! You can order samples from them too. Plus, they will send you recipes to add your protien into. Tami

Wehy gourmet cookies and cream and th4e chocolate peanut butter are my most fav's and the unjury mixes well , I just don't like the unflavored with water, the unflavored in soups is just fine no nasty after taste, also if you join their aouto ship program you get a disocunt.

I LOVE Strawberry ISOPURE. It tastes pretty good. I mix it with half non-fat milk and half water. It has 50gr of Whey protein in 2 scoops. Hope that helps! The other thing I do is use new whey protein bullets. I like orange or grape and I mix them in my 24oz camelback water bottle with water and half of a single propel packet usually lemon or berry. Tastes like juice! There is some controversy as to if the collegenic protein used is digestable. When I spoke with my surgeon and nutritionist BOTH said it was great. It is enzymatically pre-digested and thus totally available. My labs have been great and honestly they are my primary protein supplement. It just takes some playing around with to find flavors that are tolerable. Good luck and if I can be of any help just let me know! I am 5mo post lap RNY and have lost 118lbs. And hey! WELCOME TO THE LOSING SIDE!!! Hugs ~ Tomi

I, too, did not tolerate powdered protein... which meant I wasn't getting in nearly enough protein for healing and muscle retention. Keep on searching until you find one that works! I personally like milk chocolate 50 Gram Slam (on ice) from GNC. I've also heard good things about ISOPURE. Always sample when possible.

I have tried taking the chocolate protein powder and adding it to ice and some milk and making a shake out of it. It's a little better. I also tried adding a little bit of banana to it. I know I wasn't supposed to have fruit but I didn't do it that often. The good thing is that since you are pre-op you can guzzle any of the drinks down. After surgery it's a lot harder because you have to sip so much. I have never tried the clear protein powder.
