Question:
How Much Biotin to take?
I've heard that we should take Biotin to prevent hair loss....but no one has said how much. I was at the vitamin shop and there are several different products, each containing a different mcg amount. I chose 1000 mcg lozenges, but would that be too much? And if not, how often should it be taken? — zandeldm (posted on January 21, 2008)

All doctors are different, but my doctor starts his patients on biotin
before surgery. He says that it does not prevent hair loss but that it will
make your hair shaft thicker and stronger so that when you do start to lose
hair it will not be as noticable. I take 5 mg or 5000 mcg. I get mine at
Walmart (120 pills for $7.00) Good luck.

Hi Dani,
I take the 1000, and it works for me. I take 2 in the morning, and I was
able to see the different in a few weeks. My hair is back and looks great.I
was taken the lower dose and not enought and now it looks great. I would
stay with the 1000, and 2 of them to see the results. Good Luck, Carol

I go to mulitple suport groups monthly. I've heard Bioitin recommended for
people who fear hair loss. Any surgery is a trauma to the body, and hair
loss is a possiblity. I don't think there is an established guideline for
how much Biotin should be used. You just want to make sure you're taking
multiple times the RDA of Bioitin a coupleof of months prior to surgery and
3-4 months past surgery. We had one woman who took the Bioitin, and still
suffered severe hair loss. Then she lost the weight and had a "tummy
tuck", and with this surgery she suffered hair loss again.

I am 9 1/2 months post op and I take 5000 MCG (5 mg)bought at wal-mart. I
take 2 capsules in the a.m. and 2 capsules at night. You can start off
with only 1 in the a.m., 1 in the p.m and see if it works that way. Taking
it both in the morning and then at night keeps a steady amount going into
my body. And by the way I also get anywhere from 70-90 grams of protein
each day. Good luck and God bless!

My surgeon recommends 3000 mcg - I use the GNC "Hair and Nails"
formula - 2 tab. a day.

I was told to take 5000 mcg daily. It really does work!

Hi, I have had some hair loss and asked my nutritionist about Biotin. She
told me not to take extra Biotin, just what is in my daily vitamins. She
told me to eat more protein. I have been doing that and I seem to be doing
ok right now. I take two chewable Flintstones complete vitamins each day
with 2 chewable caltrate + D plus a day. Don't forget regardless of your
situation you can over dose on vitamins. Please be careful. Talk with your
nutritionist. They really do know their stuff.

Whether any of the "recommended" things for hairloss work, or not
is really moot. The person that says their hairloss stopped after taking
this supplement or using that shampoo didn't really know if it would have
stopped anyway, kwim? My advice is to take the advice if you wish, and
accept what comes. To tell you the truth, I did it all, and still lost 1/2
my hair. So? It grew back. I did waste a lot of money...and could I say
that had I not done all these things I would have lost ALL my hair? Who
knows? Regards~
