Question:
Alli diet pill after RNY
I am 5 years out and have been a stable weight for 4 years. I exercise and lift weight 4 days a week. i want to lose another 35lbs. Has anyone used that new diet pill "ALLI"? Considering how our new plumbing is after our surgery, I was wondering if it is safe for us? Any comments and opinions are welcomed,,,Thanks! — sblady329 (posted on January 8, 2008)

As you know our stomach digest things faster, like alcohol. I would
seriously ask your doctor.

Sandra I have taken the RX:Xenical-which is what Alli is a percentage of.It
is a fat blocker that can make your body leak a discharge from the rectum
do to the fat that it keeps from digesting. It gets everywhere and it smells
horrible.i would not suggest this drug to anyone.Even though it blocks fat,
the good fats are also blocked as well as vitiamins.Alot of the nutrients
we get are lost w/this drug. That is unexceptable for bypass and band people
since we take vitiams due to the lack of what we don't get anyway.this drug
is only a part of Xenical but my experience was so embarassing.I woke up in
my bed and it was wet several times with what looked like used Crisco
oil-but bright orange.Stool smells so bad it almost made me ill just to go
to the bathroom. It is a punishment tool to keep overeaters of fat from
eating it-and it works if you want to put up with the oily discharge that
can come raging out of your fanny at any moment.Everything we eat has some
fat in it.this drug finds it and blocks it so you get rid of it another
way-through the orange river that will flow like water when you eat
anything with fat, even a salad made me have to run to potty, and I do mean
run! I don't think I would wish this stuff on the devil. This was my
experience w/Xenical, and this drug is like 1/4th of the strength of
Xenical. If you don't beleive me surf the web.I know others will have the
same opinion. You can't win with a fat blocker because there is fat in
everything and if it is blocked then it is coming out in an unpleasant
way.I have never smelled anything like it.I had to throw away my 400thread
count sheets because of what leaked out and I didn't even know it. Don't do
it.Save yourself!Anything would be better than this stuff.Honestly, it was
horrible.Good luck my losing friend.Any questions just ask.I'm not shy or
ashamed of my journey.I earned my success and will do even better after
bypass.Best wishes friend.

I don't have any experience with this drug, but I to had my experience with
xenicle (sorry for the spelling) and the effects of it I did not like and I
did not finish my prescription for it. I had used this drug long time prior
to my surgery. Best way to describe it is that fatty residue you see from
doing dishes after having spaghetti. If you have gas hope you have some to
liner for your panties, if it is anything like Xenicle.

I got a perscription from my PCP of the xenical which is similar to the
"Alli" product you are inquiring about. Before I could get it
filled two of my friends got theirs and their experience was very
unpleasant like the other posts response to your question. I think the
risks and anal discharge are to much of a sacrifice. Please consider other
options.

Alli works by preventing your body from absorbing dietary fat.
People who have had WLS (some types) are at risk for nutritional
deficiencies due to malabsorption. There are two types of vitamins...
water soluble and fat soluble. You have to have dietary fat in order to
absorb fat soluble vitamins.
Alli does not help your body lose weight. Alli works by
"punishing" you for eating fat by causing GI upset, diarrhea,
unpleasant bowel movements, and "anal leakage." The theory is
that if you begin to associate eating fat with oily leakage, you will stop
or reduce the amount of fat you eat. Hopefully, this leads to weight
loss.
If you are currently eating a low fat diet, then this drug may not be
helpful for you. If you are eating a high fat diet, maybe this will
provide the motivation to make better food choices.
Alli is considered safe for most people... but you are not most people.
You have had your GI anatomy rearranged so please check in with your doctor
or surgeon before deciding to take this medication.
On the topic of Alli, people think that the oily discharge, smelly stools,
and other unpleasantry are side effects.... they're not!!! These effects
are meant to remind/persuade you to make better food choices. If you
aren't absorbing the fat you eat, it has to go somewhere.
Best wishes.

I just saw on Good Morning America that the Alli pill is not as successful
as first thought. There were 2 women that it didn't work and they both
claimed they stuck to the diet like bread to butter. There were also some
successful people on this show. They ALL said that without the exercise
and strict diet added in, NOTHING in the world would have made the Alli
pill work. So you're choice, BUT I would discuss this with a nutrionist
preferrably from your surgeon's office, or one familiar with the surgery.
Good luck and God bless!

Lisa's description is right on! My doc prescribed Xenical to assist my
supervised weight-loss program and to help reduce the size of my
"fatty" liver (I had stage II - NASH). I suffered through the
leaks for 2 months by wearing adult diapers - just in case - 'cause you
never know when the leaks will occur and there is no "urgency"
like with normal bowel events.
