Question:
Hello! I have a question for all of you.
I had surgery on 10/9/07 and went home on 10/11/07. The next day I started experiencing a tingleling, numbing sensation in my thighs. Especially when I was sitting down. I mentioned it to the doctor and she said that nerve pain is sometimes normal after surgery. Just this past weekend the pain has gotten worse! It's not the tingly "ouch!my leg is asleep!" feeling anymore, but just extremely sore and very painful!! It even wakes me up at night and I have to change positions! It hurts when I sit, stand or lay down. :( I was just wondering if anything like this has happened to anyone else!! Thanks!!! — sally_ogin (posted on October 22, 2007)

I had nerve pain down in my abdomen. I am 3 1/2 years postop and I STILL
take the prescription Gabentin for nerve pain after all this time. Strange
it would be in your leg but I guess everyone is different. Best

May be normal, but did she check your electrolytes? Or check for a blood
clot?

It sounds like you might have thrombopheltis (spelling wrong). I had the
same thing and was told to massage bengay into it everyday 2-3 times and it
did work. Check with your doctor.

It would be a good idea to see your doctor again and make sure it couldn't
be a blood clot. That could be serious but can be easily treated. You are
still in the postop period where they occur. Would get in right away if
your thigh is red or hot to touch.

Hi Sally. I had my open RNY on 10/8/07 and have experienced the same thing.
I also had it before surgery because of my bad back. Sometimes it tingles
and other times it just downright hurts. And I also find that changing
positions helps. It was the same thing before surgery for me too.

After you check with your doctor as the others suggested, if the pain is
still there, see a chiropractor. They may have pinched a nerve in your
back. I had no idea until I read the doctor's report, but they move your
body around during the surgery, (laproscopic). My left shoulder was pulled
out and it has taken 3 months to relieve all of the pain. If you don't know
any Chiropractic doctors, I find one question will set apart the good from
the not so good. Will chiropractic care cure illnesses? If they say yes,
don't bother with them, if they say that they can help you feel better and
deal better with your problems, you can probably trust them. Phyllis

I had Gastric Bypass on 7/30/07. After they complete your surgery while
you are still in the operating room, they stand you up to make sure
everything is okay. I have the same numbness on my left thigh outside and
the doctor thinks it may have been from the strap they use to hold you up
and on the table during this procedure. I massage mine and use ben gay as
well. It has gotten better the further out I have gotten. Check with your
doc and see if that's where the strap was on your leg too.

I had the same problem ... scared me to death! It would tingle and wake me
up at night. I woke up one night to the feeling that someone placed a
lighter to my thigh, i thought i was going to die. My husband rushed me to
the ER and they told me that my nerve was dieing in my leg that is why it
burned ( small town) .. It feels alot better now, every once in a while i
will feel a tingle.
