Question:
Mirena IUD???

Hi there! I was looking into the Mirena IUD as I am just 6 months post-op and hate dealing with the fear of condoms breaking. But it looks like they won't give it to you if you haven't had children yet. Anyone have any personal experiences with this?    — buffy_CT (posted on May 24, 2007)

Beth... I don't have any personal experience, but just wanted to remind you and anyone else reading that while an IUD can protect against pregnancy, it won't protect you from STDs. So if you are still single and dating, stick with the condoms...

I currently have one myself, no problems so far. I just have very heavy "time of the month". I got mine about 2 months post op. I am married with 2 children; my Dr. did say he only gives them to women who are married and are in monogamous (sp) relationships. Keep in mind, like the other poster said it may protect against pregnancy but not STD's. Hope this helps!!!!!

Nope, STD's are not an issue. Married my one and only partner in September of 2005!

I am getting the Mirena IUD in about 2 weeks, I understand that your period will be heavy in the beginning...but I hear eventually most women have very light to no-period-at-all after one year. I hpoe this is true. Good luck Beth.

You need to have had a child because otherwise your cervix is closed. Even if its been years since a child they sometimes wont put it in. I had one placed after my daughter was born. I am totally for it.. I am currently trying to get WLS and do not want to get pregnant and stall this process any more.

I had Mirena about 10 months ago. I became pregnant with Mirena. Just beware.

Hi Beth, I had Mirena, I had to have it surgically removed..It created a huge infection in my cervix and uterus. I was in so much pain I couldnt move, they had no idea what happened (but i had heard the horror stories from others) Well 3 weeks after I had it removed i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant. So not only did it cause infection but I was also able to still conceive a child while on it. If i had to do it again I would go with Depo shot, AND the Ring...double protection! Good Luck ~~Amanda

Thank you all for your responses. I don't think I will be opting for Mirena at this point. Too scary for me! I don't want to go back on the Depo...I was on it for 5 years and know that it can take up to 18 months after stopping it to conceive. We don't want to have to wait that long once I am medically cleared to try. I think I may look more into the ring and keep the condoms... Thanks again for sharing your experiences and knowledge with me!
