Question:
Why do I have such a problem in "staying Full"?

It seems like I can never stay full. Am I lacking something in my diet, that keeps me thinking that I'm not full? My greatest down fall is sweets. I am 4.5 years post op. I had the distal RNY. Can anyone advise me on what I should do?? Or have any ideals??    — Wesson-L (posted on January 17, 2007)

Are you taking in enough protein. I am 4.5 years out and I was feeling the same way and started back on my protein drink in the morning and boy do I feel better. I am not that hungry either.

Obesity is a head issue with a body consequence. We don't need to be full. Your head will continually trick you that you need/want more. It is a lust that we have and think about day and night. You have to change your mind set that you are not hungry, therefore you do not eat instead of I'm not full, so I must eat more. The brain is a ticky creature and is very willing to fool you into things you don't need to do, food is a big one. I strongly suggest you get some diet support before you reverse your benefits of 4.5 years of hard work. Perhaps weight watchers or an on line program, or maybe just some diet classes or books to re teach yourself how and what to eat. It is worth the effort, keep fighting. Best to you. Patricia P

You should make sure you eat lots of protein and few carbs. Even "good carbs" make you crave more carbs. A new study shows that high-protein, low-carb diets such as Atkins do not add to your heart attack risk as opponents claimes. http://www.webmd.com/content/article/129/117452.htm

Something we talk about on the Grad list all the time. We're all 1 yrs +. ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG ) . most of us have found the use of protein supplements to help with appetitie and craving control, ESPECIALLY sugar. Focusing on protein-heavy meals, as well as protein supplement (don't add sugars, like milk or juice) might help you get a grip on yourappetite & cravings. We don't stay fresh posties forever, sadly, and we've lived a much longer life doing "normal" things tha having to think before each bite, even if we lived a long life of dieting. I'm 12 yrs out and have to remind myself that no, I can't just pop that cookie into my face because we're both in the same place at the same time. LOL I may as well simply apply it to my hips, so my rule is that I just need to have a protein drink and if I still want it, THEN I can have it. Obviously, so far the protein is winning.

Michelle's response make A LOT of sense to me and is a VERY helpful idea; try what she says, drink a protein drink FIRST and then if you're STILL hungry or want something, have it....as hard as it is sometimes for me to drink my shakes, I do know that they are good for my body and do make me "feel" full! I love sweets too and have recently been able to tolerate them at 7months out...NOT good! TT
