Well you have a lot of reading and learning to do, there are three sugary types that are at the top of the common list being done currently , each has it unique benefits, cost factors, risk, and life requirement post op, along with different success rates that vary with the individual. general patterns do fit by the larger numbers in different groups. as with all statistical equations. you will want to visit the Lap band forum, and read the descriptions of the surgery, and the message board, the Main forum, this one, is representative of the Gastric Bypass, or RNY in general as it is the most performed, and provided by insurance wls . and then my choice,(not really option, cant have rny, incompatible with my one of my comorbids, and my prev bariatric surgery,) The DS, visit the DS forum, ask about it, and where to get, fewer doctors are qualified to do it. cost twice as much, harder to get paid for my insurance but different success rates. this surgery is also done to cure diabetesII who are not obese, or just the top,vgs for lite weights like you if you dont have diabetes , or just the bottom on skinnies to cure the diabetes alone, I started looking at the band, and its not an option, come to the ds forum and check this out.

Well since in Mexico you are self pay, I would imagine they would probably do anyone who wants the surg as long as your BMI isn't under 30? I could be wrong but I don't see why they wouldn't do you since there is no insurance co dictating who can have it or not. Good Luck to you!!!!

From the research we've done when my sister was considering the lapband, as long as you are 45 lbs overweight most surgeon's, not all, will do the adjustable lapband, her beginning BMI was a 37 with no co-morbidities. I don't suspect you'll have a problem getting the band, but do make sure you can find a surgeon in the states to do your fills or you'll have to travel back and forth to Mexico for them. I'm from the Houston area also, if you want to talk, send me an email. Good Luck! Dana

Go to www.joseband.com This dr has done thousands of lap band surgeries. You can email him and ask him questions. He is a good doctor. Or there are other drs. I remember doing extreme research on it. One dr in Monterrey is well known. One thing I would caution you, if you have had stomach surgery, you should have it done open. The scar tissue and fat can push things out of place. Another thing, if you or someone with you can speak spanish, it would help a good deal.

I know several Band patients who have had good success in Mexico. I do want to echo the earlier poster about being sure, as in CERTAIN, that you have aftercare lined up in the States. That seems to be a pretty common issue with Mexican-banded patients. Best of luck to you!

Is the reason for going to Mexico because your self pay? If you have the band in Mexico. Are you able to pay a surgeon in your area to have fills about every 6 weeks?
