Question:
Would a hiatal hernia stop the Dr from preforming a Open RNY
My gasticscope showed this type of hernia and the biopsy was negative but I worry the surgeon will require or stop the surgery — SONIA D. (posted on August 7, 2001)

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia several years ago. I had open RNY
surgery in May 2001 and the hernia did not seem to be an issue - my surgeon
never brought it up.

I had a hyatal hernia and it was corrected at the time of my open rny in
May. It should not stop surgery. The surgeon can repair it at the same
time. Good luck!

I suffered so much for so many years from a hiatal hernia. It was so bad
that when I ate at 6:00 PM I couldn't go to sleep till about 2:00AM. I
would hurt that bad. The day of my open RNY all the pain stopped. It has
been 15 months since my surgery and not once has there been a problem. No
more pain.

My doctor repaired both a hiatal and an umbilical hernia during my lap RNY.
He said both are so common in the morbidly obese to be routine during
surgery. Don't worry. The relief of this ailment was enough to make surgery
worthwhile for me even if I never lost a pound.

I was also diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. My doctor gave me antibiotics
that I had to take daily for 2 weeks before my surgery. The surgery went
fine.
