Question:
Are you happy you had a RNY?
Was weight loss surgery a good choice? Any regrets? Is it really life changing? Are you genuinely happy that you took this step? — [Deactivated Member] (posted on August 1, 2010)

If I had to Id do it all over again. Bariatric surgery saved my life. I
have no regrets except I didnt do it years ago.Its a great choice and yes
its life changing. You have to be willing to change or you will defeat the
surgery. Bariatric surgery is only a tool for you to use to help with the
weight loss. You can sabatoge it by not listening to the doctors and
surgeons.I am extremely happy I had Bariatric surgery. My life is so much
better ,I am much happier and healthier. It wasnt an easy journey and im
still heading towards my goal weight.I hope if you decide to make this
journey with those of us on the path. That you have much sucess.

While I didn't have an RNY, I am happy I had WLS. I was banded 03/09/09 at
a weight of 384. I'm now around 233 and life is so much better and I'm
still losing. Do your research, investigate the pros & cons of each
type of WLS, and chose the one that's the right fit for YOU. Best of luck
on whatever choice you make.

It will be a year since I had my RNY surgery. I will tell you this year
has been ROUGH! Would I do it again? in a heartbeat! I was starting to
have a lot of medical issues with the weight, and quite frankly I was not
happy in my skin! As Andy stated WLS is a tool, you must follow your Dr's
directives and change your eating habits for your ENTIRE life.
I wish I was able to the the VGS instead of the RNY, but my insurance at
that time would not pay and I do not have $25,000 to do it on my own and I
had so many issues after surgery that I thank God I had insurance.
Good luck!

Hi Brenda, I would absolutely do it again. I just wish I had had the rny
earlier. I had the lapband and was allergic to it... caused so many
medical problems. Once it was removed it took 2 years before a revision
could be thought about. It was 3 years and 3 months after it was removed
when I had my RNY. My energy level is up. I can do more. I am more
confident in my appearance, which transfers to everything I do. I look and
feel good. I had been diagnosed with sleep apnea... and then 2 weeks
before surgery diabetes (A1C was 8+ and blood sugar was 500)... once I had
the surgery I never took medication again for the diabetes. And now my A1C
is 5, blood sugar is 93... this is 6 months after surgery. Hope this
helps.

I would do again, without hesitation. This is a major operation that can
have serious side effects. There is a lot of work and you must change your
diet and exercise for this to truly be successful. I had a life threatening
complication and was in ICU and on life support. This had nothing to do
with my doctor just a very bad bile leak that ruptured my intentional wall.
Even with all of that I would do it again. I am 6 months out and have lost
107 pounds and have 40 left to goal. It is life changing, and in many cases
life saving.

Yes I would again and again! They have a gastric sleevce that is much
easier. I would do that instead of RNY

I checked your profile, and see your scheduled for surgery tomorrow, is
this true? Congratulations if so...I completely understand your
questioning things, especially in lieu of a looming surgery date upon you.
This so natural...I believe it happens to most all of us. No worries, keep
your faith in you Doctor, and his staff, and you'll be fine! Keep us all
posted on your outcome, and please don't fret....you too will be here
giving your advice REAL soon, to someone in need!! Best wishes to you!

Brenda,
This Thursday, August 5th, I will celebrate my 5 year anniversary as an
RNY, WLS patient. There is not a day that goes by that I don't give
thanks. It gave me a new lease on life as the saying goes. I've been
sober for 5 1/2 years, my hypertension is gone. ( 110/70 is normal for me
now ), and my Type II diabetes is gone as well. A1C is around 95. If you
haven't had this done but are considering it, I can tell you from my own
experience that is was the best thing I could have ever done for myself.
My overall quality of life has improved in almost all aspects of my life.
One day I will get to walk each of my daughters down the aisle. There was
a time when I was fairly sure that wasn't going to happen. I wasn't quite
50 years old yet then. Are there those out there who have bad experiences?
Yes, to be honest there are, however I'm willing to bet the positive
experiences FAR outweigh the negative ones. Attitude is of utmost
importance. I looked at this a a wonderful thing and my recovery was
phenomenal. My doctor was willing to let me go back to work ( light duty )
after one week. I chose to take two weeks off, just to be on the safe
side. I did have a problem with dumping syndrome in the beginning but the
benefits from this procedure FAR exceed the temporary discomfort I
experienced. If you have other questions that I can answer I promise to be
completely honest with you. Ask anything you want. Good Luck. Ray

Hello Barbara. What can I say? I feel that my decision saved me from an
early death! It certainly has improved so much! I am now wearing size 12
for the first time in over 25 years. My work relationships have improved
and I have made new friends (some I don't want, but what the heck). I love
seeing mouths fly open when people see me. If course you have the jealous
ones but that comes with human nature and I don't care about that. The
clothes shopping is amazing!! It seems that everything looks good on me! I
have a great supportive husband, but for the first time in years I am
receiving looks from other men when I walk pass them or while while
strolling down the street. Now I do work out daily and I watch what I eat
and take my vitamins; drink and eat protein. I am almost 7 months out and
will reach my goal and BMI in 8 pounds! It's a miracle! If you are
considering WLS and your doctor is on board; do it. I had the RNY. And make
sure you attend a good bariatric group.

I just passed my 7 mo surgiversary and am down 98 lbs. I started at 291
lbs., and am now below 200, which I haven't been for more years than I can
remember. I most DEFINITELY would do it again and again and again. As a
lot of these other people have already said, my only regret is that I
didn't do it sooner. While going through the process and all the
hoop-jumping, I had my doubts, but now I'm so glad that I stuck with it.
If you can't get through all of the pre-req stuff, then you can't handle
the surgery. Best of luck to you!!!

absorbing iron and other things. Recently dx with breast cancer with
surgery. Problems with taken oral medications, hard to take pain meds.

Hi I hate to say this but for me i should have found another choice I had
rny surgery. I have a whole lot of regrets as far as me having to be in the
hospital 3 times in 3 months and then I cant eat nothing at all only
liquids until my Dr stretch my pouch. And yes it is really life changing for
anyone it's what you make of it.And yes I am genuinely disappointed in
myself for having this surgery and I ask GOD everyday to forgive and to
help me get as far back to normal as possible. Sorry that it sounds so
disappointing (my Statement)but ikts true and how I feel.
