Question:
Case Manager, How do I get one?
My Dr. Keeps bringing up getting a case manager. How do I get one? Ive just started my monthly weigh ins (required for 6 months before operation is considered by insurance) and want everything to go as smoothly as can be. Any help would be great. Thanks! — Maryanne L. (posted on February 4, 2010)

A Case Manager is a nurse who will follow a patient for a variety of
reasons. Most commonly, patients with multiple health issues or very
complex issues are assigned a case manager by the Health Plan. The case
manager will check in with you periodically and can help to coordinate
care, referrals and things like special medical equipment. I suggest you
first contact your health plan member service / customer service
department. You should find a toll free telephone number for member
services on the back of your insurance card. Ask them if your health
coverage includes case management and if you can be assigned to a case
manager. In some instances, a Health Plan may require a physician
referral. So, if you have case management as a covered benefit, your
Physician could send in a referral for you to be followed by a case
manager. Hope that helps you to get started. Good luck! -Nancy

Nancy has it right. I have a case manager through my health insurance.
Before my RNY I had type 2 diabetes and I still have a case manager for
that even though my diabetes is completely under control.

I called my insurance company and seems my company did not opt for that
feature so I cannot get a case manager. Very frustrating...but at least
they cover WLS...

I actually HAVE a case manager and have no idea why I do and what she is
doing for me. She calls ever so often and asks if I have any questions( I
don't know what she's supposed to be doing so I don't know what do ask
for). All I do know is that she was about to close my case but I told her
to keep it open because I was having rny. Maybe I can learn here how I can
best use her services, whatever they may be.
