Question:
I need some tips for heartburn.

Does anyone have any tips for heartburn. I am 8 days post op from Gastric sleeve. I am having a hard time drinking liquids as it hurts from the first sip. The doctor perscribed Prevacid twice a day. I am worried that I am getting too dehydrated. I am tired and feeling weak. Ashley    — KathleenK (posted on December 2, 2009)

Take the Prevacid. I don't know about the gastric sleeve, because I had the RNY but I still take Prevacid or some twice a day. I haven't had the problem with heartburn since surgery, but if I go too long without the Prevacid my stomach feels like it is burning.

I had the gastric sleeve on June 17,2009. I had the same problem. My Dr gave me aciphex and I will say I do not have the problem anymore I only have to take one a day but if I skip a day I can feel it slowly coming back. So I say definatly take the prevacid and hopefully it works for you. If not, ask for aciphex and see if it works for you! Congratulations and good luck to you!!

I had to eat popsicles at first and I couldn't drink water I had to drink tea and softer flavored drinks because the water was too harsh. Diluted fruit juices worked. I understand about getting in enough fluids I am 8 months out VSG and still have to remind myself to drink but I don't get heartburn from it anymore. I really had to whatch milk items they did not agree with me and I had an intolerance to whey protien drinks. I got through it and have lost 88 lbs so far. The first month is the toughest then it gets much better. You are on your way on a great journey. I hope you feel better soon and have great success.

Prevacid is good. I use Prevacid Solutabs (dissolve under you tongue) when I have a problem. They work within 15 min. for me and last all day usually. I only use them as needed, since I don't need them every day. They are more expensive, but nice to have on hand when you really are in pain. You might ask your doctor about them. Hang in there, it should get better as your surgery has probably just irritated everything. As you heal, the heartburn should subside. God Bless.

I have taken Prilosec since surgery and have just been swapped to Nexium so I can start getting it through my insurance. Trying to cut some corners with out of pocket post-surgery expenses. Also fixing to start prenatal vits instead of bariatric advantage for the same reason. I actually don't have heartburn, but just taking it as a precaution to make sure I don't get ulcers, and because I occasionally have to take a Motrin.
