Question:
H1N1 flu shot
Should gastric bypass people also get the H1N1 flu shot because of our malnutrition issues? Any input appreciated. — suzeeq (posted on October 9, 2009)

I don't think malnutrition has anything to do with your chances of catching
the flu. That would be your immune system. So for sake of not getting the
flu, it would be a good idea just to get it, or at least the regular flu
shot.

i am hoping to get the H1N1 shot when it becomes available. i have not yet
heard how much it will cost or where it will be distributed. i don't think
that as WLS patients that we are really more susceptible to the flu or its
complications but i would rather not risk it.

I read on the internet that the federal government is funding the cost of
the H1N1 flu shots so they will be free. I spoke with my cardiologist on
Thursday and he said he thought it would be a good idea for
"everyone" to get them if they are available.

I can not see why WLS would make us more prone to the flu. As long as you
are taking your vitamins you should be fine. I will not be getting one but
that is a personal choice for me. I don't get the regular flu shot either.

I've wondered about the fact that what happens if you caught the flu
(whichever), and ended up with a bad case of puking? How does this affect
the pouch?
