Question:
65 pounds @ 5 months post-op RNY. I'm so afraid I won't be successful!

I see where other people here are losing at a much fasterrate than I am. I am SOOO worried that I am not going to be successful. I read how most of our weight is lost in the first six months. This really bothers me as I still have around 100 more pounds to lose. I am doing everything as well as I can. I eat the correct foods, I exercise for 45 mins. for 4-5 days per week. The ONLY thing I know that I am doing that is questionable is drinking with meals. I have a condition that makes my mouth very dry. But I am trying to only take sips with meals now. Any words of wisdom here? Am I doomed to failure? It's making me crazy! Thanks! Paula    — PaulaJ (posted on May 29, 2009)

Paula, Don't compare yourself to others. I have been told this since I had my surgery in March, and it is actually good advice. I have lost only 37 pounds since surgery, but it's 37 pounds that I'm no longer carrying around. You have lost 65 pounds! That's 65 fewer pounds that you have to carry, so you are that much healthier. Keep on doing what you have been doing: eating properly and exercise. The weight will come off.

Hi Paula, Congratulations on the 65 lb weight loss. Everyone looses at a different rate. I had the lap-band and have lost 21 lbs in 11 weeks others have lost 10 lbs while some lost over 40 in 8 weeks. I too felt doomed. When I saw how much others had lost. But then a friend said don't compare yourself to others, as all bodies are different. Made since, so I just keep struggling along, taking one day at a time and looking for positivies, like how much easier it is to buckle my sea belt, how much more I can walk without huffing and puffing. The scale is only one way of letting us know how we are doing. Congrats again and keep up the GREAT work.

Hi Paula, You are not doomed to failure. Don't get crazy. Been there, done that. I am just over 9 months post RNY. I lost quite slowly my first 4-5 months.(no where near 65 lbs.) Thought something was wrong with me. Wasn't getting what I thought the results should have been for all my exercise and meticulous meal planning. Then it just happened.....my body got used to what I was giving it and I started losing like crazy. AMEN!!! I have never read on this site about people loosing more the second 4 months than they did the first four months, but, in my case, that's exactly what happened. Happy as a lark, still have another 50 to lose....but I have no doubt I WILL DO IT....65LBS is a lot of hot dogs!!!! Enjoy and keep moving.....IT WILL HAPPEN

wow Congrats! You are doing great!! I was a slow loser and know what? I don't have much hanging skin at all. I went to the gym 3-4 days a week and walked 3-4 days a week. I am concerned about your drinking with meals. Most people who regain weight, drink with their or just after their meals. Try really hard not to. I want people to be successful. You will continue to lose weight as long as you eat lil amounts. I am 11.5 months out and still only eat 4-5 ounces at a meal. Its my choice to keep the meals small. I eat 4 meals a day and sometimes a snack. My nutritionist and I are in sinc on this. For me, small is best. Tho I reached goal, I was still losing ..a pound a month, but still...I needed to stop and thats when we went to four meals from 3 and threw a snack in too. If you eat your 3 structured meals, and keep the calories where they should be, you will continue to lose. Don't be in a hurry...slow is better for so many reasons! Best of luck to you! hugs, Kim

You may want to take a step back and ask yourself. #1-Would I have continued a weight loss program without this awesome tool five months out? (I know I wouldn't) #2-If you didn't have wls would you have maintain the weight you were at pre-op or would you have continued to gain. #3-What is your idea of success? Isn't it to be healther? Do you realize just by loosing the first 15-20% of your body weight increases your health drastically? Have you done that? I bet you have. Don't sabatoge yourself. If your best friend said, I lost 65lbs in 5 months would you said, THAT'S AWESOME! Of course you would so pat yourself on the back and tell yourself that you are doing great. Hang in there.

Hello Paula, I agree with Dee, Pat & Patricia the most! You are doing GREAT at loosing 65 lbs thus far, congratualtions! This is a major accomplishment, so don't compare yourself to others you don't know what their doing, you don't know how their bodies work, everyone is not the same, therefore, we don't loose/gain weight the same. Just keep focused, do what your doctor/surgeon/nut says and you will be successful, hopeflly if you have these types of questions their are your first contact! At the rate that you're loosing weight you will be more successful at keeping it off in the long run. Good luck on your weight loss journey, stick to being around positive people, don't fall into the negative hype. Sincerely, SrangePassion XOXO

Understandable. As a long-term dieter, our brain has been trained that it won't work since diets have failed us. Don't worry. You WILL be successful. Every one of the folks in my support group has voiced the same fear. The surgery fixes your anatomy, but it takes a long time for your head to catch up.

65 lbs in 5 months-- that's like 13 lbs a month-- or 3 lbs a week. most "dieters" lose about 1-2 lbs a week so this is great! keep up the good work and the weight will come off!

Pau;a. You're doing great! 65 lbs is alot of weight. Don't be worried about how long it takes. A friend of mine works for Weight Watchers. It takes as long as it takes. The only person that you are competing against is yourself.

You are doing wonderful! You really are! Drinking with the meals is a problem that you are at least working on and hopefully you WILL stop...Hold off as long as you can with drinking...I struggle with this so much too! I go crazy waiting for at least 30 minutes...I try to go longer to 45 if I can...Most times I make it (by distracting myself...washing dishes, go start or fold laundry...take dog for a walk...play a internet game or a few hands of solitare...etc!) but sometimes I can't even wait 15 minutes and I'm sneaking a sip or two! So I totally understand! But really give it a fight to stop! 65 lbs is no small change!

I am almost 4 months out and I have lost 55 lbs. I decided that if I lost the weight so fast that I wouldn't keep it off. I am letting my body slowly drop the weight. It keeps coming off and I am having no problems right now. Hang in there!!

Sounds like your're right on track to me. I plateaued around months 5-7 then it picked up again. Then I plateaued at months 9-11 then it picked up again. She stay diligent and it will come off. Don't let the pleateaus make you give up. Stay on track. Your body wants to fight it. Don't let it win. Use the tool!
