Question:
Can some RNY post ops handle sugar and carbs? Do some people not dump?

Jenny, I am now 6 months out and I have not had any dumping and so far I am
fine with the sugar and carbs. I don't eat hardly any sugar, but when I
want a bite of cake or like one cookie I can handle it. Pasta and carbs
don't hurt me, but I have noticed if I eat alot of carbs my weight loss
slows down so I try to avoid too many carbs.

According to what I have read 60-80% of people with RNY will have some
degree of dumping especially with simple carbs ie sugar. Kevin

Some people do not dump at all...Some grads I know used to dump and can now
handle more and more sugar. I personally have increased in toleration, but
I do not push it and keep a limit for myself...I do not try to reach my
limit...But rather avoid and stay as far away from it as possible. I know
if I eat a protein bar with 14 gs of sugar I will not dump...But if the bar
has 28 grams of sugar , I might get a belly ache and over that, I am in
trouble! But if I eat rice with dinner and a little later eat something
else high carbs I will get very sick! So I measure my food and do not eat
more than every 3-4 hours...After a while you learn your limits...if not
SET THEM yourself and stick to it! Having no dumping is not a good excuse
to eat simple carbs and sugar regularly! So don't! :) Good luck!

I too am six months out and currently dumping is not an issue for me. I
wish it were. Its to easy to fall back into old patterns. I think it was
Anita that said to set your limits. that is what I have to do.

I am 15 months out. I have never dumped. I eat pretty much what ever I
want. I have to constantly remind myself that I could once again be where
I once was. That keeps my from eating too much bad stuff.
