Question:
Does the mal-absorption and the medications lead to osteoporosis?
I am taking all my meds, including 1800g of calcium with Vitamin D. I had the Bilio-Pancreatic with Duodenal Switch 5 years ago. — haw (posted on November 10, 2008)

I was told that could happen, no matter what precautions I took. Everyone
is different and it is hard to know which ones will and which ones won't.

Unfortunately, even taking calcium supps and Vit D doesn't always prevent
osteoprosis...You might want to do more research on your own...but
malabsorption is a bad bad thing! PREVENT it as well as you can! Once one
deficiency starts, your body goes on a robbing spree stealing nutrients it
needs from whatever source it can find and reaks havoc all over your body!
(your organs, cells and bones all need these certain vits for certain
functions) ex. Calcium defs cause start robbing your bones and
teeth...magnesium needs calcium to co-exist and before you know it, you've
got mag and cal defs...This sort of thing happens when just one deficiency
begins....An imbalance in several different vits can start if left
un-supplemented. Say you begin taking higher doses of calcium? This often
starts to deplete zinc...so then you end up with a zinc def...It's a
delicate balance and needs monitoring with labs yearly if not bi-anually!
If ever you suspect a deficiency in one vit...just get labs for all and
start supplementing where needed and it will help things get back in
balance much faster! Prevention! It's all you can do to help yourself the
best you can!
