Depends, anything specific you are looking for? I will be 5 years post op on the 21st of May. I would do it over if I had too. Still wish i would lose 10 more lbs, but I have lost over 200 and am in a size 12 pants from a 34. I have to keep that in perspective. Have gallstones now, but not having surgery as of yet. I am anemic, but need to remember to take my iron tablets so there is no one to blame but myself. MaryLyn

4 years 4 months...(hope that's close enough to five years) Never under-estimate malabsorption...It catches up with you later 3-5 years...TAKE YOUR VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS... no matter how well you think you are doing. I beat my anemia and vitamin deficiencies in two months by doing research for myself rather than trust others to take care of me...YOU must be your OWN health care advocate and KNOW what your blood test results mean and how to best fix any problems with the most absorbable vits and supps. Remember, your body is not the same and some docs refuse to take the time to find a suitable way to help you as a unique patient with a unique digestion system. Help yourself! Weight loss and maintanence is half the journey...Taking care of your health and well-being as a unique person is also a part of the journey...

Over five years out--- maintained most of my loss, but now I am like any other middle-aged guy. I need to watch what I eat, try to exercise more and keep an eye on many of the old emotional eating triggers. Of course, I'm still about 300 pounds lighter than I was when I started this process and enjoy a very active lifestyle that I didn't even dare to dream would be possible.

August I will be 5 yrs out. I lost 150lbs. I wear a size 6 clothes. I used to weigh 274 and wore a size 24. I have never been happier. I eat basically everything jsut in moderation. I dont dump but if I eat to many carbs or sugar i feel like crap which is a good thing because I love sweets. I cant really eat ice cream. I take a B-12 shot every month. I was anemic for a while about 2 yrs ago but I am good now. I actually gave blood for the first time in my life. What a good feeling. I dont know what else you want to know but theres the basics. How are you doing? Hope all is well. Oh and this was the best decision I ever made in my life

I'm 4 and a half years out from open rny and down 130 pounds. No complications. Doing very well. Only regained about 12 pounds due to eating too much crap. Once I got myself back on track I lost the extra weight quickly. My health has been much better than before wls. I'm glad I did it and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Hi, I'm only about a year and a half out--no where near 5 years; but I just had to respond to your question by thanking you for asking about it. I have been curious myself about people who had the surgery years ago. I have had absolutely no problems at all. I was out shopping the day after the surgery and have been on the go ever since. I have lost a total of 130 pounds, and I only started working out at a gym about 6 months ago (which speeded up the weight lost). My concern was that every now and then a "well wisher" will voice their 'concern' that they have heard so many bad things about the surgery. That baffles me because I read these email posts regularly, and I also go to a support group meeting given by my surgeon. I rarely hear of problems post surgery. So I was really interested in the responses of people 5 years out. By the way... I agree with them--you have to watch what you eat and it is the best thing I could have done. Good Luck!!

I'm 8 years out this month. The one thing that I don't think is emphasized enough is nutrition. We are constantly learning...many of us now have osteoporosis due to the Flintstones and Tums approach. The sad part about that is..some docs are still recommending that route. Even though, early on, I changed to the correct calcium and vitamin regime...I still have lost lots of my bones. Now we are learning that the vitamin D levels that were once considered normal are now woefully deficient and we need to bring those way up....so I would tell everyone just starting out...educate yourself...and keep educating yourself. Do not depend on the docs who for the most part...know little to nothing about nutrition. Even the nutritionists, for the most part...are trained to advise people with normal plumbing. So, please do your homework. research and learn. I can't emphasize that enough....take the responsibility for yourself...it is YOUR health..and YOUR bones we are talking about...not the docs or the nut's. They are just doing what they were trained or not trained to do....it is your body....Regards~

I haven't had the surgery yet, but am responding because my mother had this surgery in 1972 (36 years ago) She was one of the pioneers. She is doing great. She does have ostioperosis, but at 71 she goes to work 8-10 hours a day and can do more than most people half her age. She had a lot of complications in the beginning and actually had to have the surgery redone after a couple of years. She took iron and b-12 shots for a few months at one time. She originally lost 165 lbs. She hasn't really gained any weight but she has shrunk in height about 5". Bone loss.
