Question:
RNY along with hemodialysis, anyone out there?
I have been on dialysis,(either peritoneal or hemodialysis) for 2 years before having RNY 6 weeks ago. I wonder if losing this amount of weight (37lbs)in this length of time is normal or should it be more? — smuckers47 (posted on April 13, 2008)

Wt. losss varies with the patient. Several factors have to be considered
during the first few months of weight loss. How much did you weigh to
start? Your BMI? The larger patients will lose wieght fast in the initial
weeks. Over 7 months I lost about 1/2 pound per day. It also depends oh
how well you follow the doctors protocol. Following food portioning,
exercise, avoiding certain foods, high protein, proper hydration, etc.--all
are factors too.

I am almost 6 years post op from RNY. I am also a dialysis nurse. While
everyone loses at different rates you need to work very closely with your
dietician and the staff at your dialysis center to keep your dry weight
droping at an appropiate rate as you lose real pounds. RNY for dialysis
patients is very new and I think everyone has their own normal. It is now
more than ever important for you to keep up your protein intake and take
your binders if perscribed. Good luck on your journey. I hope this puts
you in a better position for possible transplant , if that is your goal.
