Question:
What did you do about resizing your wedding bands?
Hi everyone! I am just over 2 months post op and I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring and I am missing it horribly. My plan was to take it off once it started feeling loose and then wait to get it resized once I have lost the majority of my weight. I have realized this isn't a realistic plan as I am already really wanting to wear it and finding myself to be very impatient. I am just wondering what everyone else did??? Do you just keep getting it resized or what? — Shannen B. (posted on March 27, 2008)

I was able to wear mine and then five months out I had to get them resized
smaller because they were literally falling off my fingers. You want to be
careful and not keep having them resized and resized. I had to change them
two sizes.

A ring can only be cut down so many times and then the band gets weak. For
now get some white surgical tape from the drug store and wrap around the
band on the back side of the ring. This works as many years ago it is what
we did to our boy friends class rings when we wore them...I am giving my
age away, LOL!

You can buy little rubber ring guards that are very inexpensive I've found
them in wal mart.

Wear them on a chain around your neck until you get them resized.

Shannen, hold off on getting the rings resized. You'll want to do that
when you've stopped shrinking. You're only 2 months post-op. You've got a
lot more shrinking to do. I hated not wearing mine so I switched to middle
finger and now they're on my index finger. lol Resizing weakens the metal
on the band so you only want to do it once. I bought the little rubber
ring sizers at Walmart but it felt like straws to me. So, I just moved
them to other fingers. I'm 10 months post-op and my fingers are still
shrinking. :)

My rings became loose about 2 months out and then totally unwearable about
6 months out. I had them sized from a 7 1/2 to a 5 and when I picked them
up from the jeweler they questioned if they were really a 5 or not because
in that short amount of time I was in a 4 1/2. I'm okay with a 5 though
and will not get them sized again.

I bought a fake ring and have been wearing that until I get mine re-sized.
I actually get comments on it and when I tell people it is fake they don't
believe me. I would wait until your weight has stabalized before you
re-size it or you will probably just have to do it again and it could alter
the integrity of the ring.

Hi,
Not worth the risk of loosing your ring, I lost mine and thank goodness I
found it, even had a ring guard on it! I went on ebay and got a few
different fake ones, real sparklers! They look nice, very cheap and will do
for now until I reach my goal and finally get my rings re-sized. I found
the plastic tube ring guards can fall off and the metal ones can scratch
your ring, so put it away and get a pretty fake one, it will be a treat
when you wear them again when your a slim jim!!! Take care and good luck.

My friend told me she took hers to a jeweler and he put a gold piece in the
bottom that wraps around the bottom of the rings. Hers looked good, so I
took mine to the place I bought it at and they did mine for free. She only
paid $5 for it, but it's gold, so it doesn't look tacky.

I took my wedding band to the jeweler and had them put a temporary ring
sizer on them. No one will even know it's on there and it's really in
expensive. I would wait until you've lost all your weight before you start
resizing your rings. Best of luck to you!

My husband bought me a cheapy solid gold band wedding band that we could
keep sizing and he said once I lost all the weight I wanted we would put
the diamonds in a new setting and get a new bridal set and sell the gold or
have it melt down to make a charm for me that would relate to my weight
loss.

you can go to any jeweler and get a ring guard which will allow you to wear
your rings with out geting them sized yet. I will be one year out in may
and will then be getting mine sized. I have lost 130 pounds to date.

My jewler added a inside band that is plastic that wraps the edges of the
ring and allows it to fit my finger until I am ready to have it cut down.
He has modified it twice, as he has my watch band by removing links. There
is a lot of option in ring liners. If you are in a major city go to one of
the top jewlers and they will have inexpensive options. Just let them know
that you are still loosing as they first want to cut the band down until
they knew that I was a WLS patient.

I'm not able to wear mine either, haven't been for awhile, what I did is
got a pretty toe ring, one that has an opening in the back and I can adjust
as I go. I'm waiting until my goals met before I get my ring resized, Good
Luck! Nikki

Hi Shannen, thanks for writing. You can do a few things. You are just two
months post op, so that makes it hard to know what size your finger will
be. You can wrap string around the back of it like people used to do in
high school when their rings were too big. You can buy a different ring
that fits now and keep a cheap band on until you know your size, or you can
size it and then do it again if you need to. I would not want to size my
ring purposely twice. I have been married for 27 years, and we bought new
bands at 10 years married, so I had a 2nd set. I wore the 1st set because
it was smaller. We had different rings on but we both wore rings. When I
lost all my weight, I had my 2nd set sized and now I wear it. You have to
be patient with weight loss. That is part of the problem with being obese.
It is like that commercial that says "I want it all and I want it
now!". Be patient in losing and be patient in your decisions along
the way. Even if you can afford to spend the money to re-size your rings
each time, I wouldn't want to manipulate the metal so much. My rings mean
more to me than that. You decide, and I wish you well. Take care.

I have lost to below my goal weight and am about ready to have my wedding
ring resized. I have been wearing my ring on my middle finger for months
now waiting until the weight was gone before having it fixed. I did not
want to have it sized more then once! Another suggestion is to just buy an
inexpensive ring to wear on your wedding ring finger until you are at goal
and ready to resize your 'real' ring.

just keep getting it resized it did. If you go where you bought it and tell
them what your going through they may do it free.. mine was done free...
they were really happy for me. I was a ring size 10 now 8

Hi Shannen,
I had the same problem with my rings and I am using a ring guard. its kind
of hard to get use to but it was better than loosing my ring and I also
have thought of trying to get a smaller wrap to wear with my diamond I was
thinking it might help keep my rings on. Good luck with your weight loss
and I hope this helps with your problem.
