Question:
Are any oils absorbed??
I am 5 1/2 years out and take many Vitamins/supplements. I forgot that oils don't absorb so I am wondering if products like Omega 3, fish oil any others that I take with an oil base are not absorbing? I know I can take the coromega supplement but am wondering if others take fish oil, Omega 3, evening primrose oil, or any others and does any of it absorb? — Joanie J. (posted on February 23, 2008)

Yes, some oil absorbs after an RNY WLS. A lot does not because it was the
first third of your small intestine that now just processes acid to the
last third of your small intestine to aid in digestion, which use to absorb
fat and sugar. Too much oil can make you sick but not the small amount
that you take in the diet aids. The are good for you as is olive oil that
you cook with.

You'll always malabsorb SOME oils, even if you are a proximal. Hence the
issues with vits A, D and E. I have taken some of the oil pills over the
years. But I take 2-3 the dose because I suspect as a radical distal I get
very little. I've taken fish oil and a few others, but never really saw
any benefit. So, I don't know if the benefit IS "seeable" or if
I really didn't compensate enough. I tested Coromega in my own blood, so I
know it absorbs fairly well.
