First a BIG THANKS to everyone that responded to my question. Does anyone know a ballpark figure of possibly how much gastirc bypasses are costing now? Thankyou.    — Shantae J. (posted on August 25, 2007)

I would say about $80,000. I could be wrong, Pricing would probably all depend on the surgeon. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

My insurance co was billed $21k. I don't think they got that amount, maybe $3500. If you don't have insurance to cover it, you could take out a loan but I think you'd be paying it back for many many years. It depends on how badly you want it.

Mine was so long ago, the cost then was moot. But a poster brought up an interesting point. I broke my arm in May and it was undiagnosed for 8 days. Long story, but I ended up having to have emergency surgery in CA (I'm in WA). You're saying, SO WHAT? Well, the cost of the 4-day stay was $22K and change. My insurance company paid appx $7K (of which I'll pay 10%, so $700). My insurance will pay for all the follow up visits and $1500 toward physical therapy. I'm noticing the The PT runs between $ 40-100 and my insurance is paying maybe $27-80. When I have spent my "allowance", I will want to continue PT, because it's going to be a very long time before my arm is right (don't get me started on calcium and vit D !). Since I'm with Apple, I cannot negotiate a lower payment. But I *CAN* go to a private PT provider and offer to pay what the insurance pays or even a few dollars more. ... Did you follow that? When insurance pays, they pay only about 1/3 of the billed cost, but when you walk in the door and pay, you pay the fully billed price! Seems a little unfair, doesn't it? So, if you can go to support groups and get ppl to say what their insurance paid, let us say $5000, surgeon, hospital, anesthesia total, out of $25,000 billed. You can make ita win-win by offering say, $7500 or even $10,000 cash. You'll pay less, they'll get more. See?

If you are up to going to Mexico, the price there ranges from $10,00-$12,500. Alot of self-pay people opt to go there because the price is so much less. I'm going in Feb. 2008 for Lap-RNY & it's going to cost 12,100 includes EVERYTHING except your plane tickets. Good Luck!

Mine was a year ago tomorrow and my final bill was about $22,500.00 with no complications. I paid $250. Thank God for good insurance. Our surgeon will not do self pay for RNY because of possibility of complications. If you are self pay he will only do Lap-Band. Good Luck and Happy Weight Loss!

In our hospital cash price about 25K depending on the surgeons fee. That is a two day stay. If there is anything else that would be extra.

I had a lap RNY 4/18/07 and expected the cost to be around $25-30K with a 2-day hospital stay--about the same other posters have said. But I had rare but major complications--sub-diaphragm infection and fluid accumulation and then a marginal ulcer. My bottom line so far is $186K--EEK!!!! Luckily I have really good insurance so my out-of-pocket expenses have only been about $1800.

I just had my surgery done 8/16/07 by Dr. Pleatman in Michigan. I live in Ohio so I drove and stayed in a motel for 1 week. I went to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and had wonderful care. The cost was: $5200.00 for the surgeon, $5,400.00 for the hospital and $500.00 for the anesthia, for a total of $11,100.00. The stay in the hotel (hotel had a kitchen) cost approx. $650.00, gas approx. $125.00.

I'm having gastric bypass and my total will be just over $21,000. And that includes the hospital costs, surgeon fees, after-care, etc. I've been having so many problems with my insurance that I'll probably end up doing self-pay. Hey, that's what credit is for, right!?
