Question:
Any suggestions on what I should take to the hospital with me.

Sorry, still a little nervous. I am having the rny and was wondering about how long is your hospital stay. Also what are some things I should take with me to the hospital. Thanks so much for all the help. Marian    — 0204 (posted on June 19, 2007)

I was in for four days total. I brought the following: Night gown - Didn't use. Bathrobe - Used. Slippers - Used. (don't recommend walking your laps in slippers, I got shin slipits, use your tennis shoes). Tennis shoes - TOTALLY USED!! Undies/Socks - Used. iPod - used. Book - didn't use. Word Search - used. Hair brush/toothbrush/toothpaste/mouthwash - used. Cell phone - used. Anything else would of been too much for me. I couldn't concentrate on reading but the word search was nice to keep my brain active when it felt like mush from the pain meds. Good Luck!

Hi Marian, CONGRATS first of all. Take a hairbrush with you so you can beautify yourself. I was 4 days in the hospital with the RNY surgery. Crossword puzzle books. A handheld fan to fan yourself if its hot in there. You wont feel like doing much. Take a notebook and pen so you can plan your pureed menus when you get home. I lived on instant mashed potatoe for 4 weeks with butter melted in them and I made them runny, also put salt and pepper on them. For something different yoou can even add a slice of cheese melted into the potatoes. Just a little tip. Potted meat is good too and vienna sausages. Any more questions email me at [email protected], Good Luck!! Mickey........

You will have an IV so a gown and housecoat does not work too well. House slippers for walking. I was lucky and the room had a fan but I would suggest checking with the hospital or take a small one. Trashy tabloids because you really can't concentrate on a book. You have periods of being awake and sleeping from the meds. Some soap and shampoo. Toothbrush and toothpaste. Some makeup might make you feel better. Chapstick or lipstick is really needed. My lips chapped terribly. Your C-pat machine if you use one. An I-pod is great too. My prayers are with you. YOu will do fine.

I will be honest. I took an entire suit case and used nothing but my chapstick. I was too exhausted to read anything I took. I was quite sore after surgery as well. The clothes i wore the morning to surgery is what i wore home. Heck they weren't on long enough to worry about. The hospital supplied nonstick socks so need for them as i had bought some as well. Most importanly i would take a fan as it took them awhile to get me one. I was burning up the entire time. I stayed four days in the hospital, but should of been only three, but i had a little episode on the second day of not feeling well. All is well now, down 84lbs 3/9/07. Good Luck and enjoy the tool being given!

I had the rny and was only in the hospital overnight. I used my chapstick endlessly! That was the only thing I brought besides my purse and cell phone. I knew I would only be in overnight unless complications, and somehow just knew I wouldn't have complications. Otherwise the hospital provided everything else, but I only used the toothbrush and toothpaste the next a.m. for a quick brush...otherwise...nothing else is really needed...the footies they supply have good no slip things on the bottom and they are comfortable. Good luck! See you on the losing side!

Hi Marian...I packed a bag and never went in it. The hospital supplied everything. I never even used chapstick because they supplied vaseline, which did the trick. I had originally purchased new gowns, but used them once I came home instead. The hospital gowns will be fine.No need in messing up your own stuff. The tubes/Iv's make it difficult to walk around, so just in case things get messy...it's not your own stuff.I honestly didn't even look in my bag. As for make-up...I didn't wear any while in the hospital.Best of luck to you....It gets better everyday.

I wore slides/slip on shoes which were easier to get on and off to do my walking (you can't really bend over!). Chapstick. I wore two hospital gowns - one front-ways and one back-ways so I never wore my house coat. Used my chapstick. Didn't use my make-up. Quite frankly didn't care what I looked like! I was only in the hospital one or two nights. I took the disposable hospital pillow home to put against my tummy in the car. Wore the clothes that I wore to the hospital home (make sure they are roomy). Didn't read, didn't use my cpap, all I pretty much did was sleep and hit the pain pump the first day and then I tried to walk as much as possible and sleep the second day.

LIP BALM is the most important thing on my list! I agree with other posts about slippers, PJs, CELL PHONE, pen and paper. I had some complications and was in the hospital for 10 days. I am fine now, and have no regrets, and am doing well. In addition to the things I mentioned, I had my favorite smelling lotion, my own toiletries, magazines and whatever. Good luck, you are going to do great! This is the best thing I ever did for myself AND my family!!!

Hi Marian. I was in 5 days, but I am not in a hurry to go home from a hospital. I really do get sleep and rest in a hospital, so I don't mind staying (weird huh?). Anyway. I took a cd player and a few favorite cds that would calm and sooth my body and spirit (Christian music). I took a color blanket and my favorite pillow because I wanted my bedroom color with me, so I didn't feel like I was totally hospital colors (ugly white, ugh!). I brought stuff to wash with, camping wipes for the first few days (they make these and are in the camping section at walmarts and camp stores). These wipes replace a shower, so you can freshen up with them rather than have a nurse bathe you. I liked that, and my husband helped clean me up, I liked that better than nurses cleaning me. I also brought regular shower stuff for when I could shower. Boy was I glad to get a real shower. I also brought baby wet wipes and a plastic spoon to wipe myself in the bathroom. Again, you have trouble reaching, and either the nurses clean you (when they can get there), or you find a way to do it yourself. Someone recommended a spoon and wet wipes, and they worked wonders! Fight to do your walking every day in the hospital, and in fact, walk now to strengthen your legs and do some arm strengthening exercises. It is never to late to begin, so begin today. You are in the fight of your life for your life and health. Don't wait to begin the battle. Bring comfort things and things that encourage your independence in care. I wish you well. Take care, Patricia P.

Hi The hospital always supplys the fan if you ask them for one the first day. I just used what the hospital supplied. and wore home what I wore in. I was feeling so baddly in the hospital after surgery, I could just about get up and walk through the halls, then they had me on quarenteen every one had to wear hospital cover up hats and gloves.I had gotton a staff infection. I was in the hospital for 4 days...home for four then They had to reopen my incision because it got infected, then I had to go back to the hospital for 5 days again. I had my surgery December 11th 2006 it has been 6 months and 2 days, and I have lost 93 POUNDS...it is the best thing I ever did, believe me!!! I weigh 263 pounds now and I was 356 I can walk with out pains I no longer am on 11 medications LIFE IS GOOD !!! I want to wish you the best of luck, and you will not be sorry god bless Let me know how you do When is your surgery date?

You should be nervous! This is very serious surgery but you will be fine. I had surgery Friday morning and was released Sunday afternoon. I felt a thousand times better once I was able to take a shower and put on my own pajamas on Saturday afternoon. My sister and nieces came and helped me "freshen up". You really shouldnt have to bring too much, bring the charger from your cell phone because you should be able to use it for well-wishers checking on you, the hosp will provide you with the non-slip socks that work very well for walking the halls. I brought reading materials but could not hang in long enough to read anything. I mostly laid there until it was time to get up and walk. I would sleep a lot too and every time I had bloodwork or tests done, I would go on my walk, even at 3 or 4 in the morning. Good luck to you, its gonna be well worth it. Angela

Girl when I had mine I took a big ole nightgown that was easy to slip over my head when I was ready to leave and a housecoat and house shoes, toileties, barring any issues our patients at Twelve Oaks have it one day go home the next evening, I would not take any electronics you are going to be on pain meds the first day and sleep alot and be groggy and you don't want you stuff to come up missing, we have patients to xray prior to eating or drinking so your stuff will be unattened in your room unless someone is with you. I would not take alot of unnessary stuff you will have to tote out to go home. God bless you hope things go well!

Bring something to do! Check with your hospital, because you have to be very careful about using a cellphone in some areas, and some hospitals won't let you have thm.
