Question:
To post ops that are 1 year or more out. I have recently been diagnosed as type 2

diabetic and am wondering if the surgery helped your diabetes and were you able to go off medications after losing weight?    — NHDebbie (posted on June 6, 2007)

Three months before I had my surgery, my doctor found out that I just was a type 2 diabetic. They did not want to start giving me any medicine because i was about to have surgery. Its been 4 1/2 months after surgery and Im not a type 2 diabetic anymore.

Hi Debbie, Yes it most certainly should! I was only a couple months out and had my diabetic meds cut from 2 pills twice daily to a half of a pill at night. And soon I should be off it altogeth! I am already off gout meds, BP meds; and way down on pain meds. I certainly wish you the best of luck in your journey; it will certainly be worth it.. Best Wishes, Judy R

Before surgery, I was on 4 medicines two of which were for diabetes (1000 mg 2x a day and another one once a day). I came home from the hospital on a 1 mg amaril and I took that for 3 weeks and I just got my blood work back and I am not longer a diabetic. This surgery does help with diabetes. Good luck.

Hi Debbie, prior to my surgery I had type 2 diabetes, the day I was to leave the hospital after my surgery the doctor told me not to take my meds anymore. I was on 3 different meds for about 4 years. Had my surgery January 13, 2004 and am still type 2 free!! Best Wishes.........Mickey

Post RNY, my Type II is under better control but it is NOT cured. I've heard claims (from MDs) that bariatric surgery is the only known "cure" for Type II. This may be true for some or even the majority of Type II folks -- but not all. In my case, my Type II probably stems from Agent Orange exposure. I was taken off diabetes medications post surgery but have since been put back on, albiet at a lower dosage than before. Although I've lost a great deal of weight (due to better diet and eating habits stemming from RNY), my peripheral neuropathy has INCREASED since surgery, almost a year ago now. But did the surgery help? Helped -- yes; cured -- NO.

I, like Dawn am also not cured of my diabetes. I have been diabetic for 17 years and pre-surgery was on 3 oral meds plus byetta. 7 months later I am taking 3 oral meds, in control but not cured or in remission. Yes, it sucks but I am thin and healthy. My endo. is puzzled, my surgeon says it could be genetic. Every case is different...in yours, you are already one year post op...have you lost all your weight? If not your diabetes may go away if you go to a normal weight but there is no way of knowing. Good luck....Dawn, please email me.

My surgeon Dr Philip Schauer head of the ASBS says the following. The fix or cure rate for type 2 is over 95% in those newly diabetic. Its not 100% because some thin folks were never heavy and still type 2. For those type 2 a long time the success rate falls but these people are still way better off than remaining MO. Incidently there are trials going on for the intestinal bypass part of the RNY for non MO weight type 2s to help diabetes, and results were encouraging.

Before surgery, I had type II diabetes, I was taking glucophage along with a couple of other meds. Within 2-3 months, my sugar was under control. I am off those meds now. I also had high blood pressure, now I am only taking 1/2 doses of the meds. I had high cholesterol, I am not on that med any more.
