Question:
Weight Gain at 10 months

I need some help or advice and I'm really not sure what to do. I had surgery last march and I am almost 1 year out. I have done really good until the last week and something is not going right. I got on the scale last week and my weight was 147, which was great because it got me past the plateau that I was on for months but now my weight has gone back up to 155 and none of my clothes fit. I'm really not sure what to do and I'm kind of scared. I have been working out at the gym and eating correctly. Can someone help me? I am trying to keep it together here but I am in tears right now; I don't have anyone to turn to since there aren't any support groups here in Austin.    — amycathy (posted on January 25, 2007)

Log you food on someplace like My calorie counter.com. Same happened to me and I'm also 10 months out--gain wasn't so big but when I started logging food again discovered calories and carbs had snuck in on me. Also watch your salt as you may be retaining some fluid.

I am only 5 months out but I have discovered that I gain weight right before my monthly cycle. I can not weigh the week before or during because ti is not a true number. Just an idea. Good luck!

From what I understand you are supposed to keep a log for a few days on every single item that you eat and drink and then analyze it to see what all you are consuming.

Tracking WHAT you're eating is great and going back to basics works too. Don't worry, the plateau WILL break eventually! Be patient and enjoy who you are today! Tirana Trish

RELAX!!!!!!!!!!! From 147 to 155 is a natural cycle, it's only 8 lbs, your weight at any point should should stay within a range, and it's natural that at times you will be on the top end of any range... Depending on the time of the month, what you recently ate, the amount of stres in your life etc. Remember that if you're working out at the gym, you're building muscle mass, which weights more than the fat you're replacing, So, RELAX, and take a deep breath. Keep eating properly, keep getting your excercise, and don't get yourself worked up... this is a journey, sometimes your go over a hill or two, keep doing what you have been trained to do. If I can be of any help, drop me an email directly. Good Luck

Amy, hello girl, and thanks for your question. First, breath Amy, take a big and deep breath. If you are sticking to the program that your doctor has you on, that something like this can make you want to derail, but it doesn't have to. I don't know what your start weight was, but weighing 147 is a great success, take a deep breath and enjoy that moment, it was really great. The greatest thing is that you can be there again, but you may have to fight for it. If you weigh yourself every week (it seems to indicate it here), than an 8 pound jump in one week would make anyone concerned. Could this be menstruation problems? Are you in pain? Could you have eaten something you might be getting a reaction to? It is really hard to gain 8 pounds in one week. You don't give enough information to really say anything, but the first thing I encourage you to do is breath! You have done well in the past, and if you keep on track, you can do well in the future. This is just a speed bump in the road. Take your speed bump slow, and then you will get going again. Then, call your doctor, explain to their office what is going on. Maybe go back to basics, protein, water and exercise. If it is not a physical thing, then you need to be patient and faithful to the task, and you will break the cycle. Be sure and keep some clothes on hand that accomodate a few sizes. As you lose weight it is great to fit into smaller clothes, but your lowest weight may not be your forever or maintenance weight. Sometimes, manytimes we sink lower than we will level out at. Keep that in mind. Hover over the basics, key in on exercise, but all things in moderation, too much exercise (like 20 hours a week, reall excess) can do more harm than good for someone losing weight, but the basics will help you. Remember this is not just a weight loss event, it is a life changing event. Obesity is a head issue with a body consequence, and you have to tackle the head issues for life, one day at a time to get the body consequence that you want. Hang in there, steady, breathe, and be faithful. Be sure to call your doctor. Take care, Patricia P

If you have been working out a lot, you may be putting on muscle, which we all know weighs more than fat. Make sure you get your protein, water, and vitamins, and hang in there!

I agree with several others, start logging everything that goes into your mouth. When you get farther out and can eat more, you sometimes don't realize how much you are actually eating. Also, kick up your exercise. Remember, you have to work harder to burn calories at your weight now then when you started. If you need support, may I suggest an "Online Support Group?" There is one at www.denverbariatrics.com, and there is always either a doctor, Nurse Practioner, or Physician Assistant on to ask question. Let me know if you want more information about it. There may be one closer to your area. Check it out.

Just wanted to let you know there are at least 3 support groups in Austin. You can get more info at http://www.obesityhelp.com/ohsupportgroups/TX.html You are welcome at the Seton and St. David's support groups - even if you didn't have your surgery at those hospitals. The other group is an OH sponsored group.
