RNY is The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. The upper top of your Stomach once was
just stapled to form a small Pouch (which is where the Nerve endding are
which gives you the Fullness Sensations). But now this small pouch (which
after surgery would now hold 2-3 ounces worth of food about the size of an
egg). Now since this is seperated from your old stomach, the Small
intestines needs to be re-routed up pass the old stomach to your new
stomach (the smaller Pouch). Sometimes but rarely the old stomach may be
removed, but very seldon unless diseased. So below the old stomach still
attached to your intestines there is made an incission to bring the
intestines up to connect to the new pouch but then there is a connection
made that the secretions from the old stomach can still drain and combine
in the aborbtion of the food passing through your new intestine tract at
this point is the Y, But also since your food is traveling through a
smaller portain of the small intestines, there is less absorbtion thus
you'll need extra Vitamins after surgery due to Malaborbtion of the foods
you'll now be eatting,
You'll need to eat alot less and slowly to feel the sensation quicker when
you eat. As the same with drinking you'll now only sip, sip, sip and no
using straws. The only foods you'll be eating for the first 12-18 months
will be Proteins such as Meats, Fish, Eggs and Cheeses. No Carbs such as
Breads, Pasta and Rice. After 12 months Veggies and Salads can be added.
Drink Zero calorie Fluids is all that is Allowed such as Water, Crystal
Light or Walmarts brand. No juices and definently NO Sodas.
The length of time in the Hospital if there are no complications is usually
3-5 day. But that and your after care diet depends on your surgeon.
It is said that those who follow up with Regular Doctor and Surgeon Post-op
Visits PLUS attending Support groups are the Most Succesful Patients.
Good Luck on your WLS Journey, Mike
