Question:
can't eat too much and not getting nearly enough protein...I think..
is it bad if I'm not getting all my protein in yet?...I'm only getting about 6oz protein and about 10oz of water throughout the day...food? probably about 1-1/2 oz per feeding...I'm not able to eat much at all...I instantly get full once I start eating (I eat very slow and take teeny tiny bites)...I don't want to be unhealthy...help!!! — msarcia2u (posted on December 12, 2006)

Right now, water is critical. You can still dehydrate and visit your local
ER. Need to concentrate on water, skip the food. Then protein, but in
supplement, skip the food. I guess because we're 4 weeks on clears (+
protein), it doesn't seem like a crime to me. We start protein supps &
vites on day 7. But you're not getting enough water to keep your body
running!

Your only 7 days post op and your eating food already? My surgeon suggets
clear liquids and protein shakes and water for the first 3-4 weeks
depending on how your body is doing. I agree with the previous poster,
kill the food and concentrate on the protein and clear liquids. If your
not careful you can end up in the ER and or lose your hair. As far as
food---AFTER about 3 or 4 weeks, you graduated to pureed food. Any
questions, ask your nutritionist, that's what they are there for! Good
luck!

Did you have RNY? I am suprised also that you are eating food. My first
week was liquid and then full liquids and then soft up to about 7 weeks.
You need to try and get water in. I used protein supplements with water
and that is what I concentrated on for the first week or so. Try
bariatriceating.com for samples of protein powders.

HI Anitra,
I am 5 days post op so very close behind you. I am on liquids and will be
there for 10 days (12/18) and then onto soft foods. Right now, I just make
sure to get water in and protein, I can get a protein shake in first thing
of the day but it becomes more difficult as the day progresses because I am
simply not hungry. I do force my water down because it is very important.
All of the other stuff will come. I still have this bloated feeling and a
lot of pain so I dont feel much like drinking. I agree with prev posters-
talk to your nutritionist. Not really your surgeon because they do not
have all the info on what and how to eat but its your
nutrionist/dietitician that is working for the surgeon that will be the
expert.

Water, water, water is key right now. 10 oz a day will land you in the ER
if you aren't working to increase that number. As for protein, many early
post-ops struggle with getting in enough, it's a work in progress and will
get better the further out you are.

Hi Anitra. I am 2 weeks post-op. It's normal not to be able to drink (or
eat) too much at one time. I just read your profile and I am surprised
that you get to have cream of wheat! My doctor only allows liquids. I
have trouble getting all the fluids in, too, still, but it gets better
everyday. I find that establishing a "routine" helps - drink a
certain amount at certain times - so that it becomes a habit. As for
protein, just make sure you are getting more than 48 grams per day. The
protein powder that I use is 23 grams per scoop with 3 oz. of skim milk.
Not too hard to get in - just do it two times a day. but like everyone
else says - the fluids are most important. Keep sipping, sipping,
sipping! Best of luck to you. Patty.

we have all been there, my frist few weeks I could hardly get in all my
protien and liquids. Just remember to drink your water and try to get in as
much of your protien as possible. If it helps baratriceating.com has a sale
on the 2.5 oz protein shots with 25 grams of protein. Try that it might
help. Good luck and Congrats

I am 8 days post op from a LapBand. I'm not able to eat much at all,
either. To get my protein, I'm able to drink decaf tea mixed with ProStat
(a protein supplement) four times a day. The ProStat may be a little
expensive ($25.00 for a quart bottle) but you can put it in your drinks
except for anything very hot. I wouldn't recommend putting it in coffee.
It's good in water, apple juice, and tea. It's sugar free so if you're
diabetic like me, that's good. And, of course, you have your protein
powders you can put in food.
As far as water is concerned, I have a measuring cup (in fact, I have
several) and measure how much water I'm supposed to have during the day. I
sip on it all day except an hour before and an hour after meals. That has
helped me.
