Question:
Should I buy protein
Should I stock up on certain things that I will need after surgery such as protein drinks, broths and such? What do we need to have after surgery? I have 3-4 months before my surgery and nobody has discussed that yet. — missyheffelfinger (posted on October 5, 2006)

I bought low fat pudding, applesauce, broth and protein drinks. I brought
them prepackaged so I knew how much I was eating. That helped alot. I
also brought propel drinks as water all the time was boring.

Hi, I wouldn't buy a whole lot. What tastes good today might not taste the
same after surgery. Even now 10 mths out my tastes are changing again.
Use to drink a certain protein drink and now I can get it past my lips.
Good luck. Nee P

I would not purchase too much of any one thing. Your taste will change
after the surgery and continue through the first year. Not all protein is
created equal...meaning be careful when purchasing anything in bulk. I
started out trying samples and thought I had found a protein I loved, but
only could take it for about 2-weeks and then it caused me to dump. Leaving
me with two GIANT jugs that I still have in my closet one year later. LOL
So, just purchase in little quantities if you can. Heck, you might even
find yourself liking something one day and then the very next day the smell
of it is enough to get your tummy in an uproar. Now that I have been
through it...I would recommend waiting until your there and then purchase
as you go. I would have saved so much $ if I had only known. Good luck,

Missy- Now this is doing your research early on . . . .
Your taste buds are going to change so stocking up now might not be too
helpful. Of course, if canned broth is on sale somewhere, I would buy a
few cans because that can be a very soothing staple in the early weeks
(even when you can ease into soft foods, I found that I still wanted
something warm in my system and broth was the key). If you are going to
pick up some protein drinks to sample, make sure you try to find those that
have the highest ratio of protein to carbs (look for at least 10 to 1).
Also, I was very sensitive to fiber early on, so I tried to find those
protein drinks that were lowest in fiber content.
Good lcuk.

No I wouldn't stock up on protein. But I would start taking some protein
before surgery, it helps in healing. I did Adkins Advantage shakes from
Walmart. But now after surgery I don't like them. So I bought a sample
package from bariatriceating.com and tried a lot of different ones after
surgery and found 3 that I like Matrix 5.0, Nectar Strawberry Kiwi and
Fuzzy Naval. The last two I mix with Crystal Light and they taste great.
The Matrix I drink warm and cold.

I can send you a pre-op plan, if you email me privately. If you have a
copy of your doc's after care, then sure, buy those things as they come up
on sale. However, buy WAY less than you think you need! LOL. As for the
protein drinks, I'd strongly recommend samples. Some for now and some for
post-op. As I often say, "Date 'em before you marry 'em."

I agree with everyone that has commented. I stocked up on s/f Carnation
Instant Breakfast only because I love it anyway and my daughter like to
drink it. I bought a vanilla and a chocolate protein powder and after only
a week I'm sick of the thickness of it eventhough I've mixed it with milk
and ice and a little water. I went and bought Isopure from the vitamin shop
and the Nectar's Fuzzy Navel. It's really good to start the protein before
surgery because it will prepare your body for the surgery and will promote
fast healing after the surgery.
Best of luck to you!!

I bought so many differant protein drinks before my surgery and I am only 6
weeks post op. I could only drink about 1 a day, I agree the carnation
instant breakfast are the best, you can drink them with fat free milk. The
others are so thick and hard to digest, I also became lactose intollerant
and ended up throwing most of the protein drinks away. My doctor told me to
try to get my protein from food two weeks after surgery. I'm doing pretty
well. I lost 35 pouns as of last week. I eat eggs and cheese and cereal and
have gotten all my protein from food. Don't waste your money on to many
protein drinks.
