Question:
Vision changes???

I am 4 months post-op and down 110 lbs. I am noticing significant changes in my eyesight. I was searching the data base and didn't see anything on the subject and wondered if anybody else noticed problems in their eyesight during rapid weight loss.    — kechols15 (posted on August 17, 2006)

What kind of problems? Night blindness would be vit A problems. Just things being blurry, like aging? Are you taking dry form vit A?

If iam reading this correctly You have done wonderful to have lost over 100 pounds in just 4 months. It most likely is being a firefighter that I am sure helped along the way. As for the vision I would up my vitA & also Your vit d. I=Mine did change somewhat but it was not drastic. Mine change more from all- in-all aging reasons. Never needed glasses till 40 now that I am 52 can't leave or do anything without them. I have not read anything to show that wls patients have increase problems with their eyes. But get them checked just to make sure the probelm is not realted to the surgery itself. Culd be a Vitamin difficiency causing whatever problem you might be having.

Water retention and/or loss of water retention (which is typical of wls) can affect your vision. My vision changed a little when I was pregnant, and now that I've lost my weight, my eyes actually improved. 2 steps up on one side and 1 step up on the other Lots of things could be causing it, but I do think the change in our body fat can affect our vision just because of internal pressure...

You didn't mention whether you were a diabetic, but I am a type 2 diabetic, and have lost 131 pounds in 7 months. When I went to my eye exam, the doctor told me that my eyesight was better, and that I needed a weaker prescription. He said that because I was a diabetic, that my eyes were swollen and with the weight loss, the swelling has went down, so it changes my vision. Who knew that along with all the other benefits of weight loss surgery, that your eyesight getting better would be one of them...LOL. Hope this answers your question. Congratulations on your weight loss! Keep it up!

I have actually heard of this and that it can be due to a particular vitamin deficiency although I cannot recall which vitamin or nutrient it is that is lacking. Check with your surgeon's office and see if they can help. Sorry I don't know more details. Best of luck to you!

I am currently 5 mounths out and on my visit last month my surgeon did all my tests said I was a low on my vitamin a and gave me a perscript to help boost I have been bad and haven't filled it yet! I know I know, I should have filled it right away but I upped my other multi vitamin! So short story long I am having vision problems right know I never thought a vitamin defiency could cause that so needless to say I'm gonna go fill my vitamin a perscription tonight! I feel as if I didn't answer this completely. Vit A is just one deficiency we can expect. The fat soluble vites (A, D, E) are always something we will have to address. They must be delivered in certain forms to us. Little balls of oil will do us no good. Vit A as beta carotene needs to convert to retinol and we cannot convert. Vit D (D1 or D2) need to convert to D3, but we have no converter. Same with Vit E in that it must convert. We must now take these as supplements in the "final" form and they must be dry, as in a capsule.

Ken, Make sure you are taking your vitamins as directed. Vitamin A plays a significant part in eyesight. Locally on TV the media was talking about GBP surgery, a female who was non-compliant in vitamins, lost her eyesight because of the lack of vitamin A. Doctors were able to reverse her sight before it was to late. Hope this info helps. Take care, Staci from NC

Thanks for posting this question.... it is a very good one for me since I am a diabetic for 33 years and your answers were very helpful for me too... thanks. By the way.... the picture of your "reason" .... she is so precious. I use to work at a firestation in Naples Florida... but I wasn't a firefighter I just put out the fires in where the Chiefs stayed. BTW.... I really love your union... you guys rock. Probably why my Chief wasn't all that happy with me at times... always caught "talking with the other side". Shoot next time I am going in as a Union Secretary!!! Take care and good luck to you!!! I am only a lil over a week out.... but doing fantabulously!!!! Very Blessed!!!

My vision has changed, I now have to use reading glasses. But then again, almost everybody I know my age is moving into reading glasses. it would be easy to say yeah, I had surgery and my sight changed, must be the surgery. but that would be ignoring the simple fact of aging going on in my life. our bodies and everything in it are going to change after surgery, but they would have changed with out surgery as well. It just may be that surgery is not the cause of every change. It seems that since ihad surgery some people ant to blame every single thing on surgery, Have a witchy felling day - oh musst be because of the weight loss surgery. Ingrown toenail - that gastric by pass myst have caused it. Stomach ache - the wiehg tloss surgery caused it ( we are no longer allowed to get a simple stomach flu or food poisioning - it HAS to be the gastric bypass. wish I had a $ for every time I have heard "I knew someone who had that surgery - and they died" Hell, everybody dies. I know a lot of people who died from being fat. way more than I know who died afte weight loss surgery. (0) so far. Oh well being witchy today - must be because now that I am thin I think I am "all that" LOL LOL LOL
