Question:
how soon after drinking a protein shake can you drink water?
can I drink water right after a protein shake or will it wash it out of my system before it is absorbed? Sould I be waiting the hour to hour and a half that I wait after eating? — bassett (posted on June 20, 2006)

Amanda, my understanding is you can drink water immediately before and
after protein shakes. What you don't want to do is drink after food as it
washes the food out of your pouch.
The protein shakes are just like water as to them flowing out of your
pouch. Think of a funnel and how liquids go through fast, something more
dense sits there and slowly empties. Dana

absorption takes place in the intestines. you will not "wash"
anything out of your system or prevent absorption of nutrients by drinking
after protein shakes or food for that matter. with food you will push the
food out of your pouch if you drink too soon causing you to be hungry
sooner. ( at least that is what I am told, If I drink too soon I feel very
bloated and nauseated) You will still absorb all nutrients and calories
that you would other wise absorb. too bad, if only I could cause
malabsorption to increase by drinking more, I would be right on it.

Hi- good advice from Willow- I just want to tell you-its only 30MINUTES
after eating - then OK to drink. You will drive yourself crazy waiting
90mins. ALSO- how I adjusted to "not drinking" is I always make
sure I have something on hand to sip- like propel-
in the event something does get stuck & I allow myself to take a small
sip (SIPS I SAID! ) :-) to wet my throat..and Im good and down 110lbs :-)

I disagree with njbabe. I get sick if I do not wait an hour after eating
to drink anything. And an hour after drinking to eat anything! Everyone
is different, but protein shake is liquid, so you can drink affter it.

I asked my nutritionist the same question and she said you don't need to
wait with protein drinks, only food. Kathy
