Question:
Protein quality of new "test tube" proteins, i.e. protica & IDS

I have not seen anyone address the quality and type of protein contained in 3oz vials of portable proteins one is called "Profect protein" by Protica and the other is made by IDS called "New Whey". They contain 25gm of primarily "collagenic protein isolates" followed by whey protein isolates then casein protein isolate. I always heard "whey protein" is the gold standard of protein, so what is the deal with the "collagenic protein isolate"- is it a good quality protein for us to use and absorb? Hi, my nutritionist out of Northwestern Hospital in Chicago suggested the Protica Profect to me as an alternative protein source. She doesn't suggest I rely on it as my only source of protein, but it is a nice little boost for the day. The taste is great and your body will absorb it as well as a whey protein. Try them!

Does anyone know of where you can find less expensive versions of these?

Collagen proteins are inexpensive to produce (ask the manufacturer what the source of the protein is). But the body uses the essential amino acids in a certain proportion, and in that regard, collagen proteins have a poor mix of amino acids...so as a protein source, they are low quality. So the protein value to you--to your body--is potentially as low as 1/3 of optimal. The secondary proteins allow a claim of complete protein. But ask the manufacturer what the proportions are. I have to tell you, I have latched onto the profect protein drinks and they are great. I was losing hair and skin was dry and I just wasn't getting in the proteins that I needed before the profect because I can't stomach the taste of milk and even the ones that were unflavored or fruit flavored still made me seem to have an after taste of milk. I use the Profect and I also found a protein pudding called slim and healthy and if you mix that with just a little non dairy cool whip, it makes it go down like dessert. I have boxes and jars of all kinds of proteins and I haven't found any that have made to take in the required amounts of protein and even more in some instances as the profect. They have been very helpful also in the fact that the company will give you a much better price if you auto ship and I can change the auto ship at any time and extend the time between shipments. I have told many of the post ops that I know about them and they too love them. The only way to get them right now is to order online. I would love to be able to afford to set up a distributorship and sell them outright, because I am so pleased with the product, but money is prohibitive and it just can't happen, but I tell people about them and many times when I go in to see the docs I tell patients about them and even bring a few in so that new people can try them out. In the beginning I was being fed through an NG tube, so it didn't matter what the taste was, but then when that came out and I had to force feed myself these so called protein shakes, I wanted to scream. One sample of the profect and I was sold. Also, by the way, the hair stopped falling out and the skin corrected itself. Hope that this cheering section on the product helps. Debbie

Check their web pages . . . I won't use this because . . . 1. Poor quality protein. Stick to whey protein. Collagen is nasty taste, and these are particularly nasty, 2. Even if I liked it, I couldn't carry it around and drink it. It looks like some kind of sex toy or something! <g> http://www.idssports.com/
