Question:
I have been on my period for the last 18 days!!

Has anyone else experienced this? Could this just be from WLS?    — kchurchwell (posted on March 20, 2006)

Hi Karen, a lot of people experience an irregular cycle when losing weight. If the flow is very heavy you may want to talk to your doctor. You may want to consider taking iron supplements to make up for the loss of iron. If you're a post-op I would consult your doctor about this. Good luck.

I'm no doctor, but I have had a plentitude of problems whereas my period is concerned. Unfortunately it is a fickle process. Any time you disrupt the workings of your body you can bring on an unusually short or long period, as is your case. It is highly possible it is due to your surgery, especially since you are likely losing alot of weight. Weight loss or gain can cause problems with menses even in normal people who didn't have your surgery. If it continues for more than 3 weeks, you may want to consult your surgeon, they may want to place you on birth control to help control your cycle until your weight stabilizes. E-mail me if you have any questions. Take care, good luck, and God Bless!

I know that estrogen is stored in fat, and possibly as we lose fat we have higher estrogen levels in our blood? It might well be worth going to you ob-gyn. I also read your page and sounds like you are struggling with depression. If one med doesnt work after a few weeks have your doctor try another. And hormonal changes can DEFINITELY affect your mood and behavior. My sister was on antidepressants until she had a hysterectomy, and has never felt better now. I know as I started to have menopausal symptoms I needed to go to my psychiatrist and have my medication adjusted after being stable on the same dose for years. So,good luck with everything!

Are you on birth control pills? I was on them after surgery and they weren't strong enough or weren't getting absorbed enough, but anyhow, I would breakthrough bleed for about 10 days in the middle of the month, then right through my normal period time, so it was a 2 week on 2 week off thing. I did go and get different pills and haven't had the prob. since. I hope it works out for you! Bekki

Before the surgery I was on the Depo-Provera shot because my period would last a whole month. I haven't had a period in years and right after the surgery I got it. I actually called my surgeon today and he said that can happen. He also said I should call my GYN and maybe up the dosage of Depo. If it has been 18 days for you I do suggest calling your GYN and get his opionion.
