Myself and my entire family practice Tae Kwon Do. I don't participate in
super serious contact sparring as I am a wimp and generally practice with
younger students. Besides that, I've not had a problem and my doctors, nor
my master have issues with it.

I had my surgery November 2002. I was taking self-defense and martial arts
classes within about a 6 months after my surgery (I had RNY Open). Just
make sure you are fully healed, and consult your doctor to make sure that
they don't have a problem with your activity/contact level. The body heals
amazing well and quickly, so I would see why you couldn't go back, barring
any other complications. As for my incision area, I have just a little
numbness around the skin at the incision site, but that's it. Since then,
I've had two laproscopic surgeries (unrelated to the WLS), and have carried
a baby and given birth (if that isn't major contact --- especially the last
two month of getting kicked in the ribs from the inside out---then I don't
know what is). No problems...
Good luck with your surgery!
