I don't know if it depends upon your Dr. or what-but I didn't.

I had a drain tube for a couple of days, while I was in the hospital. It was taken out the morning of the day I left the hospital, but I have heard of people going home with their tubes still in. Maybe it depends on how much is still draining out....And every surgeon and every hospital is probably a little bit different.

Tracy, I think it depends on your surgeon. I did not have a drain after my LAP RNY. You should probably ask your surgeon if that is a common practice of his.

I agree with the others who say it depends on your surgeon. I did not have to have one thank goodness. Wasn't looking forward to it, lol. Ask your doctor before you go in. If you do or don't it doesn't really matter because you are giving yourself the best gift you can ever give yourself and your love ones. Good luck and God bless.

I stayed in the hospital three days and went home with the tube. Kept it in for over a week at home. My first check up he said there was too much draining and left it in. That was hurting me more than the surgery scars. What a relief when it was finally pulled

I did have one for 10 day's following surgery. It was nothing and NO PAIN when it was removed either. I was only in the hospital for 2 days after my lap RNY. I experienced hardly any pain and had a very speedy recovery..I was driving by day 5...shhhh!! I am 5 months post op and down aprox. 70lbs. I would do it again in a heartbeat. If you have any other questions or want to talk about what to expect etc... you can email me at [email protected]. Good Luck, Franca

Hi. Yes I did have a JP drain. Every doctor is different and my chose to do one for all WLS patients. I had a laproscopic RNY. My drain was in the incision below the middle of my boobs. It wasn't painful just a pain in the butt. I had to strip and drain the bulb of the drain several times a day. It sucks out the fluid that is from surgery and during the healing process from the surgery. My surgeon also used it as a precaution to see if there was a leak. Supposedly, if I had a leak, the fluid would be sucked in the drain and from the color of the fluid the medical personell could tell if it was from a leak or not. My surgeon also had all her patients do the 'swallow test' with the weird tasting x-ray stuff and some surgeons don't do that either. My drain was in for about 7 days or so. I was SO HAPPY to get that thing out. If you do have to have a drain, it's not a big deal just make sure you know how to strip and drain it. Good luck. Smiles, Jenna
