Question:
Still can eat after 1 1/2 months after surgery

I had my surgery Dec 5th 2005, I am still unable to eat. Most of the time I can not keep clear liquids down. I am on a feeding tube the Doc had put in while doing my surgery. I am looking for anyone else out the that is having trouble and would like to chat. Thanks Lucilu    — lucilu (posted on January 22, 2006)

I'm so sorry you are having problems; please keep in mind that this is not normal and you shouldn't accept it as normal. You must speak to your doctor immediately; don't be intimidated, and if you can't do it, get an assertive friend to the the talking. Do it.

It sounds like you have a stricture. Those can be easily fixed by going through a process very similiar to getting an upper GI and it only takes 30 minutes to fix. Don't be affraid to ask your doctor it is your life and you can not leave it in no one elses hands. Speak up for yourself before it is too late.

Did you ever have a swallowing type test after your surgery before leaving the hospital? It can show a couple of things...such as strictures, narrowing or leaks. There is something obviously going on. I agree with the others....This is NOT normal and should not be accepted as such(either by you or your physician). Go back to your surgeon and demand answers.

I have had 3 swallow tests 3 scopes and 2 dialations. They just keep telling me to give it more time. I have to be on a feeding tube from 9p.m. to 9a.m. everyday. I have not lost any weight and feel very frustrated, and anxious. I don't know what else I can do except wait like the doctor tells me to do.

I understand your frustration, I have had a BAD infection since 2 weeks after my surgery on Dec 15th, 2005. the doctor said it will still be at least a couple of months before it might go away...and I am eating too much!! there are alot of complications people have after surgery, I guess thats why we have to go through so much hassle to get it. But I will pray your situation improves...God bless you...

I had the same problem, although I did not get a feeding tube. Eating made me throw up constantly. I found that I could tolerate certain things more easily, and that I (still) have to wait an hour to an hour and a half after eating to drink anything and an hour after drinking to eat anything. I could only eat a few spoonfuls at a time for about seven or eight onths after, and had to rely on protien drink to get my nutrition. I am now getting better, but still have trouble with eggs and chicken, among other things, and I am a year out. Try eating different things and do not force yourself to eat what you think you should. Listen to your body. My nutritionist kept telling me that I had to eat more and it was a surgery problem, but my surgeon said it was not. he was right; I just had to pay attention to my body.

I haven't had surgery yet and probably won't cuz I'm losing weight due to not being able to eat. I worry that because I'm fat, no one sees it as a problem (my GI doctor even congratulated me for weight loss that happened cuz I couldn't eat and have chronic nausea and vomitting). I have found that I can handle slurpees and italian ices in small quantities but that's about it. My food intolerances aren't because of WLS.. but because of other health problems. I thought I would write tho and tell ya I know what you are going through and I hope things get better. If you want to email me, feel free (mrsidknee at gmail.com -- substitute the 'at' for @) Good luck!

I am rather confused by your situation. You have a very low BMI for any sort of bypass surgery, so I have to ask you if you had the lapband done? ```````````````` Certainly, you are entitled to a consult by a second bariatric surgeon (and if you have insurance coverage, call up the claims office and demand it now, ask for another surgeon on their list). ``````````` I wish you luck. I am going through this right now with my daughter. She had rny in 2005 and recently learned she had a fistula (pouch joining with old stomach) and had that operated on in December 2009. She has had several complications since then including an abcess, two leaks, three strictures due to scar tissue as well as being on a feeding tube since December. It has been a real nightmare for her. Has anyone gotten any second opinions with complications? Also any experience with the Cleveland Clinic? We want to go there and see their expert. Now the original doc wants to do another surgery to remove the pouch and have a chest surgeon attach the plumbing to the esophagus!! AHHH
