Question:
Beans have such high carbs

I hear about using beans for protein intake, but they have such high carbs is it worth it. I ate some today and now my carbs are high for the day. What to do?    — Sharon L. (posted on May 3, 2002)

As an 11 month post op I personally dont eat beans... they are too high in carbs for the little protein they provide. As a very early post op I ate pinto bean puree, hummus and black bean soup as it was very easy to eat when I was getting used to food again. Early on... the first couple of weeks... carbs dont really matter as you are mostly focused on healing. Once you can eat fish and some chicken... stay away from the carbs generally speaking except for a bite or two. I make hummus from chick peas as a dip when we entertain and I will eat a little on home made crisp pita chips... but that is the extent on my bean consumption.

Just like everything else, beans are fine in moderation. If you eat them all day, every day you are probably not going to get enough protein "bang" for your carb "buck." But as a change of pace in a diet that is filled with other high-protein sources, I don't see anything wrong with them. Especially if they are topped with melted cheese that adds some protein to the mix on its own. One day of higher carbs is not going to hurt. If it breaks the monotony, I'd say go for it. We can't be happy living on a diet of only grilled chicken breast. Variety is the spice of life . . . Even for posties!

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I checked with my dietician and she said That refried beans with a sprinkle of cheese on top is a great chose. 2 to 3 ozs. I am only 2 1/2 weeks out. She did say to make sure the skins of the beans are blended well. No problem there. The ones in the can are pulverized. Be careful anyway. God Bless

Some of the responses to this question is exactly why I wanted a DS. I eat beans all the time and love them. My doctor has told me to eat moderate portions of anything I want. I would hate this if I had to maintain a 'diet' mentality. No more counting carbs for me, just have to make sure I get enough protein (50-60g/day) in...

I love beans....they are on the list provided by my doc. Some people can't eat them because of gas.
