Question:
For those of u who self-paid, what advice can u give?
Going to Dr Joya in Mexico would be cheaper than in the US. Is there a specific credit company u could recommend? Thx — quest4 (posted on July 12, 2010)

Especially in this economy, ask the Doctor for a discount! You might be
surprised how much they will discount the price of your surgery if you only
ask.

find out what the doctor gets paid in total by some insurance
companies...for example tricare insurance may pay 300$ of a 1000$ bill and
my cut might be $100..so ask if they will accept what they get paid by some
insurance companies...do some homework..it might pay off.

I put mine on my credit card. 13.9% interest was lower than what the
credit companies were offering. :-(

I would not recommend going to Mexico if you are getting the Lap-Band. Not
that the docs there aren't good, but that you will have the additional
expense of return trips for fills. Docs in the U.S. don't like to take on
the liability of treating a patient who has surgery in Mexico. Care Credit
is very good with financing and even have some terms that are interest
free...check them out and very best wishes to you and to your continued
success.

I went to Mexico for my RNY. It's a good option, there are just some things
you should know. The poster above is correct about doctors here being
reluctant to take on patients who had their surgeries in Mexico. First ask
around to see if you can find one who will agree to treat you when you get
back. If you're thinking of the band, just know that there is a lot of
upkeep. You will need fills.
My only other advice about Mexico is for you to do your homework and choose
the right surgeon, not the right price. The doctors here who do take on
Mexican patients only do so if they feel that you went to a qualified
surgeon at a qualified facility. Nothing against Dr. Joya. I considered
him, too. But his facilities are clinics, not hospitals.
