I am scheduled for lapband surgery Jan 12, 2010. I just had a conversation
with the nutritionist about the first few weeks after surgery. Until you
have your first fill in your band, you won't really have any restriction.
The band is wrapped around the stomach, but there isn't much restriction
from that as there is still a large opening there. Once you start getting
your fills you should then start feeling the difference. I'm sure many
others that are Post-lapband here can offer you more and better advice.

Every one's body reacts differently to the surgery. Most people have a lot
of swelling, which naturally restricts the size of the opening on the band.
There are others who do not experience very much swelling, and there is
little difference between their hunger before and after the surgery. Once
everything is healed, your surgeon will fill the band with some saline.
This will decrease the size of the opening between your new pouch and the
rest of your stomach. There was one lady in my weight loss surgery support
group who didn't feel any difference in her hunger level until the third
"fill". Once you do get into that "zone", your fears
will subside. Be sure and continue to follow up with your surgeon as often
as he requests. I am 5 years post-op with the Lap-Band, and I am at my
goal weight. I still see my surgeon every 2-3 months. You'd be surprised
how the smallest adjustment (either taking fluid out or putting it in) can
make a huge difference in your success. If you're not in a support group,
ask your surgeon to recommend one to you. I've found that the people in my
WLS support group who regularly attend and follow-up with their surgeon
each month or two, have the most success both losing and maintaining their
weight. Also, you get encouragement, information, and the benefit of
experience gleaned by the others in the support group.
