it's a phenomenon exclusive to RNY. it's basically when you consume something with too much fat, sugar or both and it passes into your intestines rapidly (or DUMPS into your intestines). that part of your intestines is NOT used to digesting all of this undigested sugar and fat (remember-- the old stomach used to partially digest food and slowly release it into the intestines through the pyloric valve-- this NO LONGER OCCURS with RNY). so basically your body FREAKS OUT that it has received all of this fat and sugar at one time that your body releases all these chemicals and you start to feel REALLLLLY awful. your heart starts racing, you start sweating and shaking and you get intestinal cramps and then a case of diarrhea like you've never had before. it hasn't happened to me, thank god but i avoid anything that would make it happen.

I have had it and you don't want it. It can have many syptoms and end differently each time. I have gotten the bloating, rock hard stomach that is very uncomfortable.I like you going to pop and then the cramping starts...sometimes thisis all i get, sometimes I have to run to the bathroom, and one time I vomited. Its from eating too much sugar, or fats or both or sugar alcohols. I had mine when I was trying new foods. Thats why they suggest eating a food and only that food for a meal several times before adding another. So you know what caused you to get sick. Best of luck to you! hugs, kim

Jen answered this perfectly! I am 9 months post RNY and recently dumped for the very first time. It was a painful reminder NOT to eat sugar! I was sick for 4 long hours and took most of the next day to recover as well. Can't expess enough the importance of reading food lables. I will never take food labels for granted again. Read before you eat!

I had the Sleeve, and believe me, I can have dumping! I tried cheesecake once. (Never again!) For me it is like being drunk sick; sweating, heart racing, nausia, dizziness. Lasted about 3 hours. But I also have a much milder "thing" that when I eat more than I should (of anything), I get really sleepy. My bariatric nurse called that dumping, too. Basically, just don't eat anything high in fat and sugar, and don't eat more than you should. Hope that helps!

Well I am headed to my 3rd week post-op. After eating only cup of soups, and drinking Isopure (I was getting a nasty taste in my mouth from 2wks of it) I thought I would make some homemade potatoe soup. I used yukon golds, as that was what I had, skim milk (a splash or two), a table spoon of "I can't believe it's not butter", I used my boat motor (Emeril Lagasse-ism) to make it extra smooth so I wouldn't have to worry about any lumps. It tasted divine, only thing was not even 10 mins. after eating, I felt like my heart was pounding in my throat, and an overall yucky feeling. I just can not get over the fact that this is "my dumping"; that potatoes will be something I won't be able to eat? Please tell this can be so!!! Or, maybe I was trying something too soon for my poor little pouch, either way I do not like yogurt, cottage cheese, and alot of things good for you...and cup of soups were getting old to me. I was able to eat a scrambled egg fine, I'm probably going to be told I'm trying to introduce things too soon? I tried homemade dried red kidney beans, no fat added and they went down fine, but had a bit of the racing afterwards as well? I am a revision from an older version of the original band, my Dr had to remove 40% of my stomache, not sure if that has alot to do with this dumping I'm experiencing. I hope it's just a phase, that will slow down and get in line with time....any one else that wants to comment on this is, greatly appreciated!

Wow I think 3 wks post op it is too soon for potato soup and most important it really does not have any protein value. At 3 weeks post op I was barely eating yogurt. I am four months post op and I do try not to eat potatoes, rice or bread, I try to eat protein and veggie, only because I do not want to have any defficiencies. A friend of mine was able to eat beans and even chile con carne (made with ground chicken or turkey) and she did great. I eat that now and I never have problems with dumping. Another great thing is the greek yogurt, you can eat it alone, or mix with with sugar free yellow and it takes great and has 20 grams of protein. At the beginning the choices we have get old but in the long run it is worth it and you will be able to eat those things again, just in small quantities. I do love soups but I try not to eat the thick ones because they have a lot of carbs. Hope this helps.
