the liquid diet is to help shrink your liver so it is much easier for
laparoscopic surgery. It does help you get over the carbs too. It wasn't
too bad. I did it for 7 days.

If your doctor didn't tell you to do the liquid diet, then you really don't
need to. I agree with the last post, the pre op diet is only to shrink
your liver before surgery so they can reach your intestines/stomach easier
without having a fatty liver in the way. So I would say "No" you
shouldn't do the diet. Although they will have you do a liquid diet the
night before and have you drink something like Milk of Magnesia to clean
out your insides. At least my doctor did. No food after a certain time
and I had to take the laxitive stuff but no liquid diet. If you have less
than 100 lbs to lose and your liver isn't fatty, you are doing good. best
wishes to you. Congrats on your surgery.

My dr required 2 days liquid diet. Easier than I thought but would never
do more than I needed to. I ate and ate and ate everything I wanted or
thought I would miss up until midnight of the liquid diet. haha. Glad I
did.

i agree...ask your doctor. if you weren't told to do so, then don't. i just
did a liquid diet for two days, and the day before was the horrible
"bowel prep" day. definitely don't just take it upon yourself to
do a liquid diet. if you WANT to, please be sure to ask your doctor.

Cindy, I had my surgery at Langhorne. To my knowledge the only Dr. who
required a 10 day liquid diet is Dr. Boe. I am glad he did, I felt
fantastic after surgery. Have you gone on the Barix message boards? They
are fantastic, www.barixclinics.com/message_boards.com

Hi Cindy: First Talk to your doctor, every doctor has their way of doing
things. I wanted the non-invasive proximal bypass, so my doctor put me on a
liquid diet for almost 4 months before my surgery..it was very hard to do
and I still didn't lose more than about 20 or 30 pounds in that time..and
it was so they could get in there for the surgery. So my advice talk to
your doc or nurse,Hugs and good luck. gabby

Gaydria..you stated your doctor had you on a liquid diet for almost 4
months. If you don't mind me asking, exactly what did that consist of?
Other than my weight, I have no other health issues; diabetes, high blood
pressure, etc., but I don't want to have any in the future. My insurance,
Anthem BC BS, does not cover WLS. I had lower back surgery in '01, and that
is really my only other issue right now. I would like to have the surgery
in hopes that this will help with my back pain so I can get off disability
and work full time. I don't think medicare will cover it either, I believe
I'm only covered for hospital stays through SSD. Did you loose any weight
while on the liquid diet? I'm willing to try anything right now to see if I
can loose some weight instead of having surgery. Thank you.

You should do what YOUR doctor recommends.
