Question:
Has anyone had any alcohol beverages since RNY gastric bypass surgery?
I know I should not ask this question but I have always received wonderful answers from everyone here. So if you have had an alcohol beverage or know someone who has how many months are you post op and how did it affect you? How much did you have? Thanks in advance.... — mriles (posted on July 24, 2009)

I have had alcohol since my surgery. I am 1 year out RNY. I try to drink
things with the least amount of calories possible. I will order vodka and
water when I go out and take a crytal light lemonaide packet and mix it in
the drink. The bartender looked at me like I was nuts but oh well. Be
very careful though because it goes right to your head very quickly. I
know people say to stay away from alcohol but I think once and a while it's
fine. I will drink lots of water the next day and workout.

I had my RnY surgery in May of 2008, 15 months ago.
I have had alchohol, but I waited a long time after surgery. I can only
have one drink (1 glass of wine, 1 cocktail) because I am a very cheap
drunk, so I also sip it very, very slowly. I was never much of a drinker
before surgery any way because I have a family history of alchoholism.
I do miss beer; it was great on a hot day! I was instructed to not drink
carbonated beverages, ever, so that is why I don't drink beer any more.

I had my first beer at 5 mos out. i can only drink about 1/2 beer because
it is too filling. If I put ice in it, that removes some of the bubbles
and I drink it real slow. I just don't have the room for a whole beer and
it is just enough to enjoy. I have also had wine, but am not a big wine
drinker, it gives me a headache.

I am a 11 months out and I have a glas of wine from time to time... I will
not drink anything carbonated becuase my dr told me specifically not to. I
don't enjoy it as much as I used to becuae it just makes me sleepy before I
have finished my fist glass.

I went out to a bar for a friend's birthday, to karaoke night at her
request. I was six months out (this was a little over a week ago) and
decided to have a drink. I had vodka with a little orange juice. After only
ONE I decided I wanted another one...which isn't typical of me.
Apparently the first one hit me hard enough that I didn't have that
"line" where I knew I'd had enough. I didn't get sick, but I was
VERY drunk. I do not recommend this. Of course, I did do some hilarious
karaoke, including an entire rap song that I performed. I would never have
normally done this. NEVER.
Hahah! Anyway, my point is, be VERY VERY CAREFUL. I never would have been
hit this hard by a drink prior to surgery. They are not joking when they
stress being careful, and drinking slowly. A good lesson to learn for
myself, but I was drunk for hours. Would have rather been way more careful,
like I was told to do. To me, two drinks WAS careful, but clearly it was
not.
TREAD LIGHTLY is my recommendation.

I have had alcohol since my rny (6/07). It hits me fast and hard, then I
sober up in about 30 minutes. I have never liked mixed drinks, usually
drink tequila. I would not recommend going overboard. My surgeon said it
was OK, just monitor myself and go slow. I only drink occasionally. Good
luck. Deb

I had wine at 2 months out. Didn't finish it and didnt get drunk. My
doctor is one of the strict ones when it comes to alcohol, coffee and soda.
I can't say I won't dabble in all of it down the road but I am aware that
it is a risk I will be taking. Some docs say it leads to peptic ulcers,
other docs act like its no big deal. All confusing.

i do not drink alcohol, but a few months ago my mom and i were at the
casino and they serve mixed drinks and beer to the gamblers...well i wanted
something to drink and all the girl had on her tray was cranberry juice and
vodka, so i said "one drink won't hurt" (i am now 21 mo.
out)...they make the drinks pretty weak and i had only drank about 1/2 of
the 8oz cup and felt a buzz already so i gave the rest to my mom. just
beware that it will hit you very very fast!please be very careful too,
because research shows that alot of post-gastric bypass pt's turn to
alcohol and get into trouble with alcoholism! I hope this helps...Holly

It doesn't take much to feel the effects of alcohol. I use to spend $100
in one night on myself before surgery now I get buzz on my first drink. I
was 1 yr post-op before trying it...I was scared. I'm 3 yrs out from
surgery and now have abd pain kinda in the area of my gall bladder when I
drink excessively..my gall bladder was removed in 1995...go figure. Hope
this helps you. Just Be Careful!!!

I had my first drink at about 5-6 mths out, during a cruise. I ordered one
mixed drink and only drank about half of it, ending up with a mild buzz.
Only drink on rare occasions and always take my time and stop as soon as I
can feel it because I don't want to risk dehydration or overdoing it-- so I
always wind up giving half the drink to a friend.

I'm 3 months out. I didn't have a drink for about 6 weeks. I was home when
I had me first. I drank slow and a little went a long way. since then I've
had many from wine to long island ice teas to margaritas to 151 bacardi,
pretty much the way I use to drink, doesn't bother any more then it used
to, I think I'm accustomed to it. I don't do it every night but when I go
out I don't worry about it I'll have a drink or 2. Oddly I have developed
a taste for beer, couldn't stand the stuff before.
