Question:
Has anyone developed an intolerance to meats in general post-op?

I am almost 4 months out (RNY) and am now having problems keeping chicken and pork down as well as beef which has been a problem all along. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!    — jeannefitz (posted on June 1, 2009)

yes from what I have learned and read on line, you wont tolerate meat very well until about 6 mo. and on. But you still have to try small amts. and in different ways. I just had some chicken parm. and had to force it. Yesterday it was ok to eat now I don't feel great. good luck

Hello, I am almost 6 months out and things vary. For the most part I cannot tolerate eggs or hamburger meat. My tolerance depends alot on the cooking method. I prefer baked chicken to roasted chicken because it is moister. I cooked a pork tenderloin in the slow cooker and it fell apart so I was able to tolerate it, but steak I can chew chew and chew but not swallow because it doesn't sit well. I also have to cut up things in small pieces as a reminder to chew otherwise I revert to my old ways and try and inhale my food. Some days I can eat anything (BUT sugar of course) so go figure. Good luck and don't get frustrated, just keep on experimenting!

I had a very hard time with pork and beef. But i could eat ham ...and very tender beef, but not hamburger, or steak etc..I chewed teh steak and then spit it out..no gain there only taste. I found that eating a lil bread..whole wheat...made it a bit easier to digest..don't know why..but it stayed down and didn't make me uncomfortable. Best of luck to you! hugs, kim

I am 5 weeks out and so far baked chicken, ground turkey, lean ham, and ground sirloin have not bothered me. I have not tried steak yet. I am hoping this continues and I don't have the issues some otheres have. But who knows one day it will be fine the next it may be intolerable for me too. Good luck.....

To tell you the truth since my surgery I do not even like meat. But I do try and eat it (I am 14 months post op). But I do make a pork tenderloin and it sits easy on my pouch. All other meat, just plain hurts even though I chew it until its mush (appetizing huh) lol. Just eat meat that is moist and not dry. I even tried taking a small mite of chicken with a bite of green beans at the same time to help make everything go down easier. It seems to work some.

Hey there NeNe....I am soooooo glad you asked. I have always been a meat and taters kinda gal but wow, since my big day that has changed. I read all the answer's you have already and though I have no idea why someone who is only 5 weeks post is eating all that meat already would be I do agree with everyone else. Eating meat is a challenge now. Ground beef has to have no grease at all and pork must be very juicy and moist, and steak is a real problem.I used to buy it with marbling and just a lil' fat on it but now it has to have a lot of marbling and has to be on the bone to retain juiciness during cooking. And the egg thing!!!!! ME TOO! I can't tolerate eggs any more. No matter how I fix them. STRANGE&*&^&&*)(_+)+%#@$#[email protected] And the chicken of course like everyone else must be moist and cut in tiny pieces. I remember before my surgery laughing because my nut said not to eat in front of the tele cause you will not pay attention to what your doing and could over eat or not chew enough and I thought , " hey, I am not a child". But, the truth is when life gets busy and you pop something in your mouth, old habits return and before I knew it I will have swallowed something without proper chewing and my tummy very quickly and abrubtly reminds me of it's new and improved size! Anyway, I usually don't chime in on the Q & A a lot but this one really hit home. Sorry to ramble on! Good luck girl and thanks for the e-mails.Oh and also......I have been buying the Buddig little bags of meats cause they have tons of Protein and they are thin sliced and moist! Hugs....Renee

I am 5 yrs and 4 mos post-op and have never liked to eat meat or cared for it since having wls. I can eat hot chicken wing tips and pork pretty good and but it won't sit well for long. I sometimes can manage to get it down. I just don't like eating meats anymore. I can eat veggies all day long. Other friends and family of mine say they have no problem with eating any kinds of meat. Fried greasy or high sugar content of 7g or more makes me dump as well as over stuffing my pouch or adding cheese to broccoli or cauliflower.
