Question:
Surgery Postponed
After being on the two week pre-op liquid for 10 days for lap rny surgery on 2/25, they have now postponed my surgery until 3/11. Has anyone been on pre-op liquids for more than 3 weeks? — troggdog73 (posted on February 20, 2009)

Why was your surgery postponed?

I am having my surgery at a hospital that has a WLS wing. They have an 4-5
hours orientation to meet the "team". Someone at the hospital
dropped the ball and they never called me to schedule it. They only do it
on Thursdays and next week it is in Spanish. Therefore they had to
postpone my surgery, because they won't let me do it there without this
class.

I lost the 20lbs required 1 month prior to surgery so I got off liquids and
ate healthy foods until countdown. The evening before my surgery, I ate
& stopped eating at 5pm & had my surgery the next morning & I
was fine.

I've done Optifast for 12 weeks no problem - dropped a pile of weight.
That was unrelated to my surgery. But yes you can survive just fine with
the right fluids over a long term. I just had my RNY 2 weeks ago and did
mostly liquids in the month before (Optifast or other healthy
meal-replacement shakes), and had healthy dinners most evenings. It worked
out fine, dropped 20 pounds. You want to keep hydrated, lose a bit of
weight, keep the liver small, etc. but also don't beoome de-energized by
having insufficient calories. I did find that the past 3 weeks when I had
nearly nothing but clear fluids, I have become really quite tired. Take
care of y'self, lose a few pounds and yr surgery will be great.

My surgery was pushed back a month due to a problem with my EKG and having
to undergo a stress test. I did the pre-op diet the entire time and it was
fine. Hang in there.
